Currently performing SEM on zinc anodes 🔬. It looks pretty, but one of the major issues with rechargeable zinc #batteries apart from hydrogen evolution is the formation of dendrites, which lead to capacity loss and ultimately short circuit the cell🪫.
As a matter of fact, Ag is an important byproduct in many lead mines and sometimes, galena is mined mainly for the high Ag content in it. Ag may occur as solid solution or as inclusion of other Ag-bearing minerals in the galena.
Remember, Galena is not only the principal ore for lead, but also an important ore for silver. Vote Galena.

Shatter cones in a recently discovered Precambrian impact site near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Shatter cones are the result of shock waves generated by the energy of a point source impact. These shockwaves radiate outwards from the point of impact, fracturing rock along the way.
I wonder, aren’t the BIF‘s rather confined to the Fig Tree Geoup ?

A M7.4 earthquake struck the Philippine subduction zone today, causing damaging shaking across much of Mindanao. Several people have died.

This is the Philippines' second deadly earthquake in two weeks. Are the events related? And how does this quake compare to the nearby M7.6 in 2023?

Made this figure for a book chapter on tectonic reconstructions that I'm writing with Jonny Wu, using a fantastic field photograph of Joao C. Duarte, of the Telheiro Beach section in SW Portugal.

The formation, heydays, and breakup of the supercontinent Pangea caught in one photograph.
The last one, with the garnets, is this an eclogite?

This is great, BUT the year we burned the most coal was 2024 and it's still going up.

#Kyanite forms distinctive blades in metamorphic rocks, recording metamorphic temperatures in mountain building events. It is used in ceramic and porcelain technology, clay texture and glazes, and even faceted gemstones.

Although molybdenite is most useful for technical purposes, it’s dioptase that attracts simply by its beauty.

#Carpathite is composed of hydrothermally deposited coronene. Coronene is also proxy for wildfire activity, a function of terrestrial biomass, atmospheric O2, and ignition sources like lightning, volcanoes, and bolides. The oldest known occurrence on Earth dates to the early Ediacarian.

⚒️ 🧪 Another big addition to the remarkable M8.8 earthquake sequence offshore Kamchatka: a M7.8 - the biggest aftershock so far.

With foreshocks, aftershocks, aftershocks of foreshocks, and foreshocks of aftershocks, it's hard to keep these earthquakes straight! Read more about what's going on:

Such a beautiful blue color as that of #hauyne can’t be matched, even if crystals are usually very small.

A difficult choice, as both minerals make wonderful crystals. Yet my favorite is #Kyanite
The huge minerals collection “terra mineralia” in Freiberg/Sachsen, Germany, is certainly one of the most respected minerals museums worldwide, a true gem and must-have-been for any lover of minerals. Besides, the small town Freiberg is a good place for a stay.
