1/10 There are very abstract concepts that must be taken as truth in order to subjugate humans to technology and its owners. One of the most powerful is the idea that computation is consciousness and life is information, the core belief behind what philosophers call computational functionalism.

In 2004, Parisian police were conducting a training exercise in the french catacombs and found, after moving past a desk and a tape playing audio of snarling dogs, a fully functional movie theater and bar. When they returned 3 days later, the equipment was gone, with a note: “Do not try to find us.”
Members of the force's sports squad, responsible
- among other tasks - for policing the 170 miles of tunnels, caves, galleries and catacombs that underlie large parts of Paris, stumbled on the complex while on a training exercise beneath the Palais de Chaillot, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
After entering the network through a drain next to the Trocadero, the officers came across a tarpaulin marked: Building site, No access.
Behind that, a tunnel held a desk and a closed-circuit TV camera set to automatically record images of anyone passing. The mechanism also triggered a tape of dogs barking, "clearly designed to frighten people off," the spokesman said.
Further along, the tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs". There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said.
A smaller cave next door had been turned into an informal restaurant and bar. "There were bottles of whisky and other spirits behind a bar, tables and chairs, a pressure-cooker for making couscous," the spokesman said.
"The whole thing ran off a professionally installed electricity system and there were at least three phone lines down there."
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find us."

The deportation order is based on Vedam’s conviction for murder—a crime he did not actually commit and for which he’s now been wholly exonerated. He entered the US at 9 months old and was a legal permanent resident before his conviction. We are so, so, so far from the light of justice.

After spending 43 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, evidence hidden by the prosecution reversed his conviction. Rather than finally enjoying freedom, ICE abducted him for deportation

Depraved.

TFW you finally read the #pandoc manual with care, and realize that there are built-in extensions that would've saved you whole *hours* on your last big project, and which you'll surely forget about by the using-pandoc stage of the *next* project, because you're dumb and bad

self-righteousness about leaving twitter for bluesky is the mark of a dimwit--but it's good to leave twitter, even for bluesky.

ON THE CORNER itself is one hour of one thing--rush-hour strut, amped up sidewalk groove--so you absolutely need to get with the sessions box, which clarifies the logic and thickens the air.

the album is odd, but the sessions are weird.

i like the idea that some wannabe-gigolo had a shelf above his bed, just below the trapeze, strewn with artfully arranged boxsets that he'd talk endlessly about while sexually disappointing random ladies

miles's early-70s 'fusion' stuff isn't consistently enjoyable or interesting, but you have to risk being wrong to get to a new kind of right--and 'ok' isn't some halfway point between them. the dense ON THE CORNER jams call up a voice *never* before heard in a studio. here's to rigorous miracle.

the ON THE CORNER SESSIONS box is an essential document. as with kb-washed IN A SILENT WAY, the guitar-drenched OTC jams sometimes follow beatless pulse into space-psych breakdowns that stretch the 'jazz' idea even more than their relentless machine-funk. 'fusion': into the intercellular matrix

Seeing a lot of celebration of this as a win.

But at NIH we have seen this exact play before.

It looks like it is the Vought strategy -and to stop the lawless firings we have to see the bigger picture.

thus far Trump's klatch of elder-abusers has ably distracted him/the press from the Epstein files--in a sane country the nakedness of the WH's bid to regain MAGA loyalty (still a couple reichstags short of a fire) would be frontpage news. i suppose we're another sort of country

the national media has a terrible shared belief: Democrats “aren’t the sort of people who do this sort of thing” and Republicans are, so it’s scandal when Democrats do it and it’s not even worth talking about when Republicans do it

Not description, definition: that’s what Democrat/Republican mean
