Apparently the entire 105 minute show survives as a kinescope. That's remarkable.

Astonishingly enough, the 11.30 to midnight portion of the first ever Tonight Show with Steve Allen (27/9/54) not only survives, but is up on YouTube. A genuine, thrilling piece of television history, this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW4G...

Jack Paar guests with Carson, 1986. Feels like a moment that should be marked with fanfares, angelic choruses and at least three major explosions, frankly. www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6Jp...

Could have been worse. Could have called it the Annual Respecful Society Endeavor Awards. Or something.

As for this Berkeley Medallion version of Mitchell's later Callan novel "Smear Job"... well, it's a spy thriller isn't it? It's just not one you'd recognise as having anything to do with Callan. "A High Chill Factor", indeed.

Cover to a 1971 US printing of James MItchell's "A Red File For Callan" aka "A Magnum For Schneider", the first Callan novel. Published by Simon and Schuster. While it doesn't much resemble the b/w Armchair Theatre antics of the original, it's a *fantastic* cover.

Yep. Beautiful moment, wasn't it?

Still among the living! I was on this session in 1968, French Horn with Jimmy Decker. I'm 78 now and it seems like yesterday. It was an all-time GREAT chart, and I knew it when we heard the playback!”

Just got an email from Paypal trumpeting their new innovation of allowing you to send a link to someone when you've sent them money that lets them access it by clicking. Haven't we all spent years frantically telling people NOT to click on links in messages?

The 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th Doctor strips in DWM are up there with the greatest, most consistently brilliant and inventive runs of Doctor Who ever. There should be a statue to Steve Parkhouse in particular somewhere.

Tell me your most unhinged Doctor Who opinion. I mean, if you’re a fan, they’re likely all unhinged anyway.

If this means we get Grobbendonk, Ro-Jaws and Purity as companions, I'm all for it...

I wonder if anyone's done a list. There must be thousands of block names by now.

Ever have a moment where something you heard *years* ago suddenly pops back into your head and makes you giggle helplessly?

Well, I've just remembered Mark Radcliffe suddenly bellowing "LARD! MINIMUM CONTRIBUTION SYNDROME-AH" after Marc's been silent for a bit and that's me gone.

Oh! Vanity by The Charlatans. There are two nagging Hammond Riffs in this that are reminding me of something - a little three note trill in the intro, and a fanfare in the second half. My best guess so far is "Time is Tight" and surprisingly, "Arrival" by Abba. Cracking tune.

In case I've never mentioned it before (only a couple of thousand times), this 1981 Pretenders Rockpalast set is probably my favourite concert performance by anyone. *That* lineup, captured in full flight. An hour and a half of pure joy, frankly. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LzR...

Continuing my long-standing, deeply passionate love affair with The Pretenders by losing myself in the "Pirate Radio" DVD. This "Talk of the Town" performance is a. making me lament once again the loss of that incredible original lineup and b. making me covet that red drum kit that Chambers is on.
The Pretenders, in a performance clip for "Talk of the Town". Pete Farndon, Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman-Scott are all standing on blocks which have vertical b/w white stripes running through them, and they're all dressed in monochrome. At the back, Martin Chambers is on a similar block, but his kit is vivid red, and he's sporting an outfit to match.

Dug out issue 1 of Judge Dredd Megazine. Immediately I'm reminded of one of my favourite things about Dredd - the names of buildings in Mega City One. Hen Broon Towers in this issue. Leafing through 80s issues of 2000AD recently, spotted Fred Feast and Jimmy Carl Black blocks. It's a broad church.

I have a strangely vivid memory of buying issue 1 of the Megazine. Don't know what I was expecting from it, but Chopper, Young Death and America made for one hell of a start. Al's Baby waiting just a few issues down the line, too. A monthly fixture in my life since 1990. Long may it run.

It is unbelievably brilliant. It should be a world classic. It takes television as far as it could go then and probably as far as it could go now. It is Lynchian.

Genuinely feels like someone found a piece of Edwardian-Era Television, that one. Like they'd been making TV back in 1909 and this is the only evidence that's survived. It's one of my favourite adaptations of anything, really.
