Students are often surprised to learn abt the lynching of Italian immigrants under Jim Crow. While these represented a fraction of the victims of this national regime of racial terror, anti-Italian violence was designed to prevent multiracial organizing against Klan country.

As Heather Cox Richardson points out, creating Columbus Day to push back against the Second Klan during an era of anti-Italian violence & lynching (a subset of anti-Black Jim Crow violence) was good, just as challenging the way we remember how Columbus advanced Indigenous genocide is also good.
