And again, I do think LLMs and gen AI are very interesting technology with some intriguing use cases, but I simply do not think our current versions ARE capable of being sentient or suffering. I would view them rather differently if I did. I have seen no compelling evidence that they are.

While driving in California is nearly always frustrating due to the low awareness level of most drivers, the scenery can’t be beat.

I was talking about this the other day with a neighbor who teaches concealed carry classes.

I don’t think practicing at the range occasionally is gonna give anybody lead toxicity beyond background levels. If I worked at an indoor range…maybe? I know range rats who go a couple of times a week.

I’m afraid I can’t agree with that sentiment. Here in the United States we let way too many drunk people drive their cars and it kills a lot of people every year.

We don’t treat it seriously, and I wish the people who drive after drinking would simply stay home and die.

There was a bridge between these things. Yes, you used to have to go to Nevada to play big Time table games with the big kids.

Now you can do it an hour outside of Redding or a number of small California towns. Dozens of busses back and forth every day with people throwing money away.
