There's a magnificent passage in "The Dispossessed" about this.
"Speak not of what men deserve. For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger. Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning, and you will begin to be able to think."

@weel.bsky.social and I theorize that this is at least sometimes because cis people are so clueless they misunderstand *which direction of trans* and also don't...know about passing. so they assume "trans means they're the opposite of what I thought they were" and start going Uhhh Ummm Sir Ma'am ???

The Dutch, naturally, have this sorted.

At this #Delft intersection, people on bikes and pedestrians get a continuous green.

The arrival of a car or truck sets off a sensor, which allows it to cross. The default is green for humans, red for cars.

not to repeat the obvious but: if they are doing this to one of the most famous Western activists alive, imagine what they are doing to the people whose names we will never know

The push to extend trans people's legal childhood is a modern iteration of homophobic policies that set a higher age of consent for gay people than for cishet people.

In this case, an elongated period of minority deprives trans people of lifesaving care during a critical period of their lives.

This past weekend, I went to the World Gay Rodeo Finals in Reno, which celebrated 50 years of gay rodeo.

I grew up doing rodeo as a teen and felt like I'd never be able to go back because I came out as trans. This story felt like a homecoming.

my extremely Fresno take is that rodeo people are AT LEAST as weird as furries, collectively

if you’re a random middle aged congressman your only correct opinion about furries is “not quite sure what they’re up to but they seem to be having a good time, is there anything they want so they’ll vote for me?”

What's the takeaway here? Most importantly: distrust that is politically salient & organized such that it has a clear partisan valence is not naturally occurring; those benefiting from it make more of it. Its extent & legitimacy can be made & so, perhaps unmade via political contestation.

This isn't to deny that democracy *is* in crisis. I'm highlighting that the crisis is in part manufactured by the populist right as a weapon of power. Per @polphilpod.bsky.social, there's agency here. So, no, democracy did not have it coming due to insufficient leftism; it's being killed by fascists

We can also see it in cratering support for the Democratic Party. Some perceive it as too extreme, & so should 'moderate' on hot button issues, others hate it because it's not 'extreme' enough (eg they don't fight; aren't left enough). Incompletely theorized agreement that the Democratic Party sucks

When different sides to a conflict can agree about part of it for their own, different reasons, we call it an "incompletely theorized agreement." Critiques about inequality, racism, etc on the left & reactionary panic about migration/race & gender on the right generated such agreement re: democracy.

they have been trying to do meme authoritarianism, and that means generating the right kinds of content--the forces of Order vs the forces of Chaos, riots and violence and burning shit and ""antifa supersoldiers""

the kind of imagery to justify the kind of powers they aspire to

The thing that explains their behavior - almost all their behavior, including the choice to commit incredible violence against random foreigners, is that they not only believe that Twitter is real life, but that real life mostly exists to create content that will play well on Twitter

It’s impossible to overstate how much “abolish ice” is the normie position now here in chicago — just countless random moms at toddler soccer on a park district field asking me where I bought my anti-ice t-shirt. average people don’t like our neighborhoods being terrorized.

Another reminder that a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users.

ALL ROAD USERS.

And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all.

For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them.

To be clear:

LA County has declared a state of emergency BECAUSE OF the federal government.

The Feds, LA County is (correctly) saying, have CAUSED the emergency.

This is a striking political moment of internal collapse. Local govts feeling compelled to protect their ppl from … their own govt.

But what I hope happens is that you learn a completely different lesson.

There is no safe ground. So you might as well stand and fight while you can.

Because fascist regimes eventually come for us all. They can not be appeased.

ICE is randomly targeting peaceful protesters because the point is to terrorize the public into accepting martial law.

Indiscriminate attacks send the message that there’s nothing you can do to stay safe.

The regime wants you to cower at home and cede the streets of your city to their control.

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.
