That's the $1.3 million bill my kid incurred in his first ~94 days. Why does that make me respect the ACA?

I'm not a slogan-chanter and, frankly, I'm pretty bad about being social and getting involved in group activities of any kind. But in today's newsletter I talk about how going to No Kings made me feel better. It made me feel like we're going to win. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...

It's hard to say this without coming off corny as hell, but I cannot tell you how good and inspiring it was to be in that crowd. Not because I made new friends or got caught up chanting slogans or singing or whatever. And not because being there made me made me believe things are going to immediately change for the bette, because I know better. No, it felt good because it made me feel less alone and less crazy.

I work from home, I'm out in public less than a lot of people, and I spend a lot of my time taking in the world through my computer. When you do that it's easy to trick yourself into feeling like you're the only one at wit's end. It's easy to fool yourself into feeling like the rest of the world is just going about its business, not caring terribly much about the things that have depressed and enraged you for months. It's an absolute balm to be around a few thousand folks who are every bit if not more unhappy and angry and determined to make things better than you are and when you're among millions of people across the country feeling the same way.

That was especially true once I realized that the vast majority of the people there were nothing like me. There were old people and very young people. Some hardcore lefty types the sorts of which I converse with online sometimes but way, way, way more normal liberal or middle-of-the-road types holding signs that made me laugh or scratch my head. People who wouldn't, to their great credit mind you, understand half of the things I or the people I follow on social media rant about on a daily basis. And that's good! Partially because it means most folks aren't as internet poisoned as I am, but mostly because it reminds me that thousands of people have at least one super important thing in common: we don't like what's happening to this country and we want to fix it.

The shitheads running this country want us to feel isolated. They want us to feel weird and out-of-touch for not being on board with Trump's authoritarianism. They want us to despair and to give up. But when you see that several thousand of your neighbors are willing to come downtown on a Saturday – while the Buckeyes are playing no less! – to oppose tyranny and demand change, it's impossible to feel hopeless. It's impossible to feel alone.

A day of marching is not sufficient to stop the madness. But it's necessary. And it's encouraging. It's a reminder that there are more of us than there are of them. And that we're going to win.
