in that scenario (a secure cpu+firmware with insecure ram/storage/io) i think it is possible to get some meaningful computing done by throwing a lot of public key cryptography and signature checks at the problem

…on the other hand, “trusted code with an untrusted device” is exactly the scenario for console manufacturers! obviously with full attacker control it’s hard to even establish anything you trust, but it’s reasonable to assume that the code itself can be inspected but not modified by the attacker

the (un)cool thing about malware is that it doesn’t need to know! you just throw exploits at the wall until you find one that sticks. (in this thought experiment i’m assuming everyone knows it’s already malware so no one is concerned about it disguising its behavior)

really wondering how many people are daily driving 10+ year old hardware or even daily driving old versions of operating systems. saw a video the other day from someonr who isn't concerned with Windows 10 EOL because he daily drives an old Mac running OSX Lion from 2011 and doesn't need more
