Hi, I'm Peter and I draw comics!

I've worked on the Avatar: the Last Airbender comics, written some Dragon Prince graphic novels, and created a few other things too.

A page from a comic pitch I did, showing a character sitting on a sign built onto a massive metal structure. Airships fly through the rain in front of him. Inset in two panels we can see him looking down at a pilot's pin he's holding in his hand. A cover I did for the Avatar: Imbalance Omnibus (which I also did the interior art for). A goblin guy and his robot friend. A drawing of a space guy holding his helmet and looking at the camera.

Oh my god..... I'm so sad, I feel like this guy only just retired recently, one of the greatest artists ever. The documentation about how he went about designing and illustrating his posters taught me so much. Go read up on it, as an artist you gotta. 😔

Just saw on IG that Drew Struzan has died. RIP to the man who painted my childhood.

It’s very normal to start there, I think. I just am not especially interested until it starts to evolve to suit the artist’s own hand.

It feels so weird because it sort of makes sense fundamentally, but then you can’t really dig much deeper. It’s tough to describe, but this is kind of the feeling.

It’s apparent! You can kinda see when it happens.

Also you’re providing great context! I did not even once get the impression that you’re diminishing my point at all 😆

To a certain (but maybe lesser) extent, this applies in comics, too. There are definitely visual touch points in big team efforts where a house style helps affect a sense of continuity when artists switch out.

I don’t think you intended to (or it wasn’t your main point), but you made a fully correct observation about my bias—I’m mostly thinking of illustrators who cop a particular animation-bound style. I expect illustrators to have a strong personal voice!

I mean sure, but I have to imagine they went on to do other things beyond the mouse

It’s sort of also how I feel about artists doing anything in what they think is a “Ghibli style,” yeah. There’s very little thought put into it, and it’s typically a purely aesthetic exploration motivated by largely uncritical nostalgic feelings.

My irrational art pet peeve is when people try to do Glen Keane-era Disney. They never do it well! Keane is kind of singular at doing his thing!

Two bookmarks taped to a clear ruler in front of a bookshelf with philodendron leaves hanging down it. Left bookmark: A happy yellow lab with a big book in front of them. Text reads: "I can't stop reading! HELP!!" The bg is a slightly dire red.
Right bookmark: Sleepy rough collie napping with their nose in an open book. Three big Zzz's are above them. Text reads: "Just resting my eyes..."
