Fun fact about off street parking requirements: most people with garages use them for storage and do not park their cars in them.

If it fits, I sits.

Pedestrians & wheelchair users can simply *deal* bc this driver has decided to use the sidewalk illegally & unsafely as their VIP parking space.

Inflexible mandates are wasteful!

Towns are seeing they CAN HAVE NICE THINGS (more homes 🏘️, trees!🌳) with flexibility!!!

So far in 2025, 11 cities have clearly signaled that the era of mandatory parking is coming to an end! 🎉

A table titled "Cities That Abolished Parking Mandates in 2025". It lists cities and the dates they removed mandatory parking requirements. The cities are Toledo, OH (Sep 9); Oak Forest, IL (Aug 26); Shoreline, WA (Aug 11); Denver, CO (Aug 5); Boulder, CO (Jul 24); Botnell, WA (Jul 8); Bremerton, WA (Jun 4); Fairview, OR (Jun 4); Franklin, WI (May 6); Fitchburg, WI (Apr 8); and Sherbrooke, QC (Apr 8).

“States as diverse as Washington, New Hampshire, Texas, and Montana each passed laws to reform their onerous local parking mandates this year ... While the details differ, the story is the same: Democratic and Republican, rural and suburban states are reforming their outdated parking regulations.”
Opinion: CT shouldn't lose its opportunity for parking reform
Arguments against parking mandates are so compelling and common sense that municipalities across the country are doing away with them.

Under-appreciated aspect of Austin's Parking Reform:
Austin Community College was freed from parking rules that forced them to add parking spaces every time they added more classrooms - which they were building with local tax dollars!

These rules are dumb, and not just for High Schools.

Seth Goodman’s graphic (above) shows what US planners deemed to be the absolute minimum number of parking spaces required for a 200,000 square foot high school as of 2013. Why does a school in Mesa "need" twice as much parking as one in nearby Phoenix? Beats me!

In good news, I got this book just in time to bring to Shoup’s memorial service at UCLA tomorrow. Very special that he got to read & edit these essays in tribute to his work before he passed away last year. 🥹

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hold on a second. Answer the question. As Speaker, do you believe it's appropriate to use American cities as training grounds for the military, calling those people 'the enemy within'?

JOHNSON: I'm not comment on your characterization of what the president said.

We need more people to state unequivocally, and proudly, that cities are great. That they are wonderful areas of opportunity, of rich culture, of innovation and creativity, and of high quality living. Because they are!
