The time I tried to make the audience sponsor icons jump up and down appreciatively at the end of #RAMP2025 but I forgot which axis was vertical so they all just left in disgust

That excerpt is from a longer piece where I talk about "The Great Dictator" but spend more time on a lesser-known film from 1942 called “To Be or Not To Be” starring Carole Lombard & Jack Benny as stage actors in Poland who outwit the Nazis.

It's FASCINATING to watch in today's context

Column: What classic movies can tell us about our current moment
In times of uncertainty, Hollywood used to rise to the occasion with something to say about it all. What can classic films tell us about the rise of fascism?

When I hear 3 Tufted Titmice scuffling in the tree over the feeder, next I look for them playing on this rail, in a camellia bush and the stash of flower pots! 🪶

Late for today's #BirdOfTheDay since I wasn't sure I had anything today's theme ('Family Paridae' aka 'Tits, Chickadees & Titmice')

I've seen tufted titmice around here, but haven't ever managed any decent pictures.

But this Carolina Chickadee showed up outside my office window in August, so:
A bird with a black and white head, white chest, and gray back and wings perches on the soft evergreen leaves of an Arbor Vitae. Its black break is slightly open.

Thinking about petroglyphs again. Thinking about what I would fill a vast blank wall with. #art #drawing #rockart
A 3 page collection of various animal glyphs in the artist’s sketchbook. They have been drawn with a colored pencil and inked over with a brush pen. Tigers are the dominant species depicted, but there is also a Rhamphorhynchus pterosaur, a wolf, a tufted titmouse, a ball python, several betta fish, a turquoise darter, and two coelacanths.

This is pretty close to what we're asking for in terms of device-level parental controls and leaving the internet alone. It doesn't require ID or other sensitive info uploads, it's a parent inputting their child's birthdate in the phone upon setup

AB 1043 does not apply to websites, meaning the technology is not currently available to adult sites who wish to block minors. While there is inherent privacy risk in all AV solutions, device-based solutions are more privacy preserving than the platform-based verification mandated in other states.

California just became the latest state to require device-level age verification. Under AB 1043, users must verify their age when setting up a phone or downloading apps, forcing Apple & Google to build age-check systems into devices.

"Hello"
Red-bellied woodpecker holding on to my finger as it looks over the situation before selecting a treat.
Woodpecker with an off white belly and a red cap and red between its eyes going down to the base of its black beak. It's hanging on to my finger and hand like a shelf and looking over to assess the situation before deciding what snacks it might want to pick.
ICYWW what it feels like to have it grab my finger, there's not a strong pinch. All of the birds exert just enough pressure to keep their balance and hold their weight, which is to say very little. Almost nothing. Especially if they're standing on my hand and not having to hold on like this woodpecker. Even here, though, it's sense of balance is such that it requires very little effort for it to hold on.

Happy Tuesday friends... assembling my photos to create my annual calendar, I came across this Tufted Titmouse from January, taken at Huntington Beach State Park in SC. Northern Ohio Titmice are camera shy. Happy this dude was not. #birds #birdingOH #wildlife #nature #photography #eastcoastkin
Center frame, facing and looking left, perched on a thin branch of a Live Oak tree, a Tufted Titmouse examines the branch for insects or insect larvae. Captured in Murrell's Inlet, SC, along with the flora of the tree, a nice sky-blue background enhances the bird's features. From Allaboutbirds.org., Tufted Titmice look large among the small birds that come to feeders, an impression that comes from their large head and eye, thick neck, and full bodies. The pointed crest and stout bill help identify titmice even in silhouette. Soft silvery gray above and white below, with a rusty or peach-colored wash down the flanks. A black patch just above the bill makes the bird look snub-nosed.
