I do each panel in Paint / stick figures in a notebook, even though I can't draw. I assumed this is control freak behavior, but so far every artist I've worked with said that these were super helpful.

Not at all! Especially if it's particularly important to the story that objects/buildings/people are specific distances from each other. Sometimes a little napkin doodle explains a situation much more efficiently than heavy paragraphs of text

Comics Writers, when the layout of a space is narratively important you can draw the scenery/setup you want. It can be crude/basic shapes! You can pop that right in the script. We're working in a visual medium, it's helpful even if you think you can't draw (I promise)!

Positive: the bifurcation of markets. There are many more audiences willing to buy & read comics than there were when I broke in, and so many more ways to get them.

Neg: drawing comics used to be a middle-class job. Many publishers now expect artists to live well below the poverty line. #lieberAMA
