I also want to add - this wasn’t to say Portland is the greatest city ever, since there are a LOT of problems that get routinely glossed over in the ‘teehee shitposter’ narrative. For example, the long-term virulent racism and more recent gentrification of working class/minority ethnic neighborhoods

All of this is to say that Portland political humor, which often makes the national stage via absurdist protests (like right now) or statements of solidarity that other groups find baffling (like the Wall of Moms during the BLM protests), is steeped in this same sense of creative frustration.

Alongside the yearly field trip to the end of the Oregon Trail where we churned butter and did pioneer tradwife stuff, my elementary school had a long-term Art Literacy program where we learned about artistic movements and were encouraged to think of ourselves as inherently creative.

I’m from Portland - like REALLY from Portland. My mom and her mom and her mom’s mom were from Portland. I went to UOregon. My partner called my “aggressively Oregonian” yesterday.
