Getting along like Unicode in an ASCII file. In a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Alabama, Mobile in particular. I like SQL. And, of course, EVERYTHING I post here is on my own behalf, speaking only for myself, etc. unless explicitly stated

I’ve been re-reading the old Lensman novels. They GENERALLY hold up, well, ok-ish, and are fairly entertaining. The setting would be fun to revisit with a few updates. Might have to write some fan fiction that no living human will ever see.

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket

Adding my voice to the 'Christopher Columbus was bad even BY THE STANDARDS OF HIS DAY' chorus.

I’m sitting here writing a thing and it occurs to me that I should inform any newspaper editors or other media administrators who see this that I am happy to write something for your outlet if you want it to be six weeks late and not about what you asked for

Christopher Columbus was a profoundly evil genocidal piece of shit, and if hell is real, I hope he is roasting there slowly in a vat of boiling acid. He was so horrible other European explorer types and the church were like "Whoa motherfucker can you not?"

A comic illustration by Jim Benton:

A witch with a long nose, wearing a hat and cloak, stands over a glowing green frog. The witch says, "Hocus Pocus! A Prince no more! You shall live the rest of your life as a frog!" The frog, with a pleased expression, responds, "Oh shit yeah." The background features trees and bushes in a forest setting. The comic is signed with Jim Benton's website and Instagram handle on the left.

Oh man they got the Super Marlo World too.

I'm glad you have that! What a wonderful opportunity to honor your father and salve the grief rolled into one.

Oh man, the power switch on my Magic Trackpad broke this morning. I think I've had it for 5 years. Oh well, I have a perfectly serviceable, very nice mouse as a fallback.

A haven’t got any memes close to hand, but here’s a heron!
A heron that is rather unimpressed with my lack of fish, looking straight into the camera.

I bet there's something similar in iOS, I admit I haven't looked. Thanks for the idea!

The timer that kicks you out - what tool is that? I like that idea, boot me out whether I want to or not.

I’m so sorry to hear it. I’ve walked that road, and I know how hard it is. All my best to you and yours in this hard time.

Also, @rickbrannan.com, I pulled down a copy of The Apostolic Constitutions from Appian Way’s github the other day - I’m really looking forward to reading it after I finish the books I got from the library. (Spoiler: I probably won’t wait, I’ll just work it in somehow.)

Well thanks! I appreciate your kind words!

I can’t remember how I changed mine, but I only see my subscribed subreddits on my homepage. It can be done! I’m only subscribed to a handful of things over there.

I can pretty much guarantee that nobody on here would miss me or notice that I was gone (ON HERE, folks, ON HERE). This is not fishing for compliments or anything! I am a nobody!

I’m a real conflict between my desire to stay informed and my desire to not get overwhelmed. I’ve been pretty conscientious about not following doom-and-gloom accounts, but there’s just SO MUCH. I may need to just stop the social media altogether for a while.

Oof. My hearing ain't what it once was myself and I rely on the subtitles for SO many modern films and shows due to the insane audio.

Jonathan Ajayi and Adarsh Gourav are fantastic. Timothy Olyphant is also excellent as Kirsh. Really, though, good performances all around.

Also, as I've said before, if anyone makes a Discworld movie or series based on the City Watch, Adrian Edmondson is the only choice for Willikins.

One of the BEST parts of Alien: Earth is watching the actors playing kids in adult bodies. They did SO WELL, especially Smee and Lightly's interactions. They are so convincing as a pair of tween dorks who instantly became best buddies.
