This is the *most important thing to know* about LLMs.
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

This crosses my mind every time I see a breathless article about LLMs "developing survival instincts" or "resisting being shut off" or "blackmailing their operator"

That's not how this works. It's not how any of it works.
I cannot tell you how many tech journalists at prominent media organizations do not understand this

AIDING FASCISM: TN’s GOP Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti is trying to help Donald Trump rip up the U.S. Constitution.

What if Biden had issued an executive order repealing the 2nd Amendment? Hello?

We’re in the middle of a constitutional crisis and that’s how reporters should be covering it.

Our military is being paid by an anonymous donor.

Our WH East Wing was demolished for a ballroom - paid for by donors.

These aren’t acts of benevolence or patriotism.

This is the oligarchy assuming control, insidiously becoming part of how we function.

Every American should reject it.
I generally drink quite a bit when I meet my family for Christmas and Thanksgiving. I try not to overdo it, but this has made me pause and think.

The only truly ethical response that a self-described artist can make. Anything else is a betrayal of one's colleagues.
“I am not interested, nor will I ever be interested. I'm 61, and I hope to be able to remain uninterested in using it at all until I croak. ... The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, ‘I'd rather die.’” 🫡
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro says 'I'd rather die' than use generative AI
Del Toro's new Frankenstein adaption reimagines Mary Shelley's 1818 Gothic novel. Frankenstein was like a tech bro: "creating something without considering the consequences," he explains.

If Ronald Reagan was alive today, ABSOLUTELY he'd be a big critic of Trump. Those of you who deny that are perhaps a bit ignorant of history.

Country music used to be punk. It used to be “fuck the man.” Now it’s just about “how deep can I get the man into my throat?” Bootlicking sellouts. Long live the outlaws.

Informed debate based on reliable information is a cornerstone of any healthy democracy.

False or distorted information online can spread faster than ever, shaping opinions and undermining trust.
The mental gymnastics goes like this:

"I am normal. I like Star Trek. I am a Republican. Therefore, normal people are Republicans who like Star Trek."
It's the same thing where it's natural as a human being to assume the positions one holds are "normal" while the positions others hold are abnormal in some way. If you take part in critical thinking and metacognition you realize this is false.

If you don't you just assume that "normal" = "like me".

NYT: “Trump elevated multiple proponents of his fraud claims into high-level administration jobs… these activists could wield their power to discredit future results or argue for a federal intrusion into locally administered voting systems…” 😕 🇺🇸 🗳️

The dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated the same as any other New Yorker.

And yet, for too long, we have been told to ask for less than that, and endure hatred and bigotry in the shadows.

No more.

From the Orthodox Barbie archives:

“I have no doubt that both men and women experience the call to ministry equally. However, in the past, when women have experienced a calling, it was often disregarded for the sake of complementarianism.
