“Since siding with [Obama] twice, Iowa has become a stronghold for Mr. Trump. Yet perhaps no state has struggled more with his economic policies. During the first quarter of 2025, Iowa’s GDP dropped by 6.1%, more than any other state aside from neighboring Nebraska.” www.nytimes.com/2025/10/26/u...

How Trump Demolished the White House East Wing
By putting the demolition of the East Wing before the necessary approvals for his ballroom, President Donald Trump borrowed a tactic known as “stake-driving” to force an outcome.

Every time I’ve done the architecture tour in Chicago (which I highly recommend), I’m struck by what a hideous scar on the city skyline Trump’s building is. Just a garish monstrosity with no reverence for the space around it.
I did have an "abundance" joke ready to go when Trump demolished part of the White House, but Ross Douthat is doing it for real.

NBC News finds that:
-- ICE has shortened its training from 13 weeks to six.
-- Nearly half of recruits couldn’t pass an open-book written exam.
-- Recruits "are supposed to attest" they can pass the physical-fitness test, which requires them to run ... 6 mph.

OK, so we get the state intervening in the market, but not in a socialist way, in a right-wing nationalist way that’s corrupt and corporatist. A social nationalism, if you will. We can workshop the name later.

There probably are more important issues, and I feel confident we can find someone who has never had a Nazi tattoo to confront them.
Sen. Bernie Sanders is doubling down on his support for Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, saying there might be "one or two more important issues" than the Marine veteran's tattoos.
Exclusive: Bernie Sanders slams media's coverage of Graham Platner
"I'm not overly impressed by a squad of media running around," Sanders said.

I think the irony here is calling out basic vetting as 'purity tests' while simultaneously demanding purity tests all their own that somehow lack 'don't be cavalier about literal Nazi iconography' as a redline.

Idiocracy was too optimistic actually
HuffPost asked why Pete Hegseth wore a tie that looked like the Russian flag.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell replied, “Your mom bought it for him, and it’s a patriotic American tie, moron.”

See the issue is that Trump ran on releasing on the Epstein files, and Bondi said she had them sitting on her desk ready to go, and then Elon Musk tweeted that Trump was in them and they were suddenly deemed a hoax and Ghislaine was moved to a spa prison, so you can understand the fresh intrigue
Mike Johnson: "Suddenly now, they've somehow convinced themselves that the Epstein files will be damaging to President Trump and Republicans in some way that they've imagined, and so they feign outrage."
