In Japan, "anime" per se is not a big deal. They don't get into debates of what is and what is not "anime." They don't define themselves as "anime fans."

It’s not that anime is worse overall now. There’s just so much being made at once that it’s harder to find the good stuff. It’s worth trying, though! Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen have been in the last five years!
