If Shabana Mahmood wants us to think she's in control of immigration, she might try a bit of planning and openness rather than looking helpless against the "flood" which can only be stemmed by requiring them all to speak better English than most Brits.

If Mahmood wanted to tackle declining in trust in politicians a good step would be being honest about immigration. It isn't migration which is the issue, it's the misinformation demonising migrants which surrounds it. Europe's border policies already cost lives.

Per @edwardluce.bsky.social in this excellent and insightful peace, it would be rash to assume Trump knows what he is doing. Especially with China. He’s punching way above his weight class with Xi, a man who knows exactly what he’s doing in response to Trump’s trade war.

"Trump is a field day for Palantir, OpenAI, xAI, Anduril & others. He may think he's the ultimate peacemaker. But his actions are stoking China’s self-belief and elevating America’s military-AI complex. It would be rash to assume he knows what he is doing." My column. www.ft.com/content/7343...

When I see announcements like this, I have to ask - how many of the people out there who are so vehemently anti-migrant would actually pass English at an A-Level standard?

Heathrow. Passport control.

A smart young man presents himself. He's arrived for a new job in a specialised profession.

Border guard: Well this all looks to be in order. There's just one thing..

Man: Yes?

Right. A good example of how difficult Catholics can be to politically categorize is back in Nov of last year my priest gave a "you can't vote for abortion" homily and then a month later said "but we also have to protect the poor and immigrants from the cruel incoming Trump government." 🙃

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

I would guess that not a single Republican makes even the mildest criticism of Trump over it.
