Wassail WIP - Green man jacket 26/01/24. Drawings of common leaves from England & Jamaica on fabric patches.

Here's to thee, old apple tree,
That blooms well, bears well.
Let's have hat fulls, and cap fulls,
And three bushel bag fulls,
And little heaps of apples under the stair.

Was hail!!

Today in #31DaysofGraves is Inside - so here's the crypt at Llanblethian, closed off for centuries and found during repair work in late C19, full of skeletons (they are now reburied in the churchyard).

Portal 8. Staffordshire. Another unconventional horizontal portal made to look like a mossy grave. Gotta watch out for these ones. #tombtuesday
Portrait colour photo of a misty graveyard. A wall runs across the top third of the image and in front it is green grass with graves, and brown leaves on the ground. The closest grave is a rectangle of lime green moss on the ground. The headstone is gone. There are trees in the mist in the background.

Would Hooklanders in London exile like to hear me talk in an East End pub about the origins of the county and its folklore next year?

This is why I get so exasperated when people suggest SF written 50+ years ago as the place for new readers of the genre, especially young readers, to start with. There is SO MUCH that will throw them out of the work, from outdated tech to outdated social structures. They'll leave and not come back.

Yup was just gonna comment on this! My kids always notice how outdated computers or other technology seem when I make them rewatch e.g. original Star Wars trilogy rr something

I love the cover of my 1965 Pan paperback of Lady Cynthia Asquith's 'Second Ghost Book'. There's no artist credit unfortunately. It's both charming and spooky, even though the back cover bills the contents as 'Macabre and Horrific' (which to be fair, several are).

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the UK countryside is full of interdimensional portals. You just have to know where to look.

This is my watercolour of Nether Largie South Cairn in magical Kilmartin Glen. Constructed around 5000 years ago to house multiple burials, it was later enlarged to to accommodate two secondary cists.
The original artwork is now available on my Etsy shop here: shorturl.at/HDzSI

Portal 7. Huddersfield. Possibly a portal to The Secret Garden?
Portrait colour photo of a pale warm brown neat stone wall with a window in it. The wall stops before the top of the window, and there's an arch of stones above wall height to show the top of the window. The wall is on a road side, and the road slopes down to the right. Through the window, and above the wall (top half of the photo), you can see vibrant green tree leaves.

As October begins, we contemplate how the sea wind had its way with this now-fungal saint.
scary sea-weathered saint on the church near Hartlepool headland (body of saint is heavily eroded down to a veined or boxwork-like underlying structure of the stone, which looks like weird branching fungus).

My controversial opinion of today is that I don't like Ben Aaronovich, and I find recommendations of his books as 'similar to Terry Pratchett' in particular, incredibly cringe. 📚💙

What do you call this plant?

A while ago I asked on here and on instagram what different names people have for this plant. A lot of people said Bindweed, Convolvulus, or Morning Glory. But I was surprised at how many names I was given that were similar to the one I know: Granny-pop-out-of-bed

A black pen in a crosshatch technique and printing ink applied with a rubber roller on white paper Illustration of a large Victorian house situated on a small island surrounded by a misty estuary. A track or causeway leads up the house, long damp grass and seaweed either side of it, cart tracks visible in the damp muddy track. The house has many dark windows, chimneys and a porch at the front of the building, it is tall and imposing and sits awkwardly in the landscape. A lone figure in a long coat stands in front of the house. A streaky grey sky above and a thin mist is rolling across the island. Atmospheric and eerie.

Portal 6. Somewhere in Cornwall.
Colour portrait photo from inside a dark cave. The floor is covered in sand and there are footprints in it. The irregular stone walls are wet and shiny. In the middle is the entrance to the cave, an uneven natural rocky archway leading to a beach. The cave is so dark that the outside is over exposed and bright.

Today in #31DaysofGraves is Skeleton AND it's #MementoMoriMonday - so here is the very crudely carved cadaver effigy from St Dogmaels. Probably a prior or senior monk from the monastic community there.
