THINGS WERE NEVER GOOD. there's this tendency humans have to glorify the past and want to turn back time to fix our mistakes or flaws. the idea that there is some utopian golden age to return to is, simply, an ahistorical fantasy based on, say it with me, nostalgia. it's always just degrees of shit.

which tended to be closed ecosystems, all it took was a handful of the "ironic" guys getting mod and admin privs to begin elevating their friends and installing them as mods of new communities or boards. it's all infiltration in the guise of "remember when things were good?" but here's the thing...

this is also roughly the time they began to move into fandom spaces, which 4chan, being an image board for nerds, was able to nicely facilitate and also provide a base from which they do their radicalization stuff on normies and find in roads to other sites like message boards or forum sites...

but then the other out and prouds show up and start distorting perception using fear and nostalgia to coerce the weaker elements of their "in" group to move right, and that helps them bring them into the fold for radicalization while also further isolating and pushing away marginalized communities.

the "ironic" Nazi showed up and pulled "it's just a joke either everything's fair game or nothing is!" (btw thanks south park) enough times that people became desensitized to it so when his out and proud friends showed up he could cape for them "woah calm down, bud's just jokin'!"

when we started to see the hyper online underground far right reactionary movements begin to bubble to the surface, a great example of this exact phenomenon is the first two years of 4chan's existence, as someone who watched it in real time it's exactly the current group chat based strat we see now.

now, to expand on this and add some dreaded nuance: were the Republicans the institution always full of Nazis? no, but have they always had incredibly bigoted values and policy positions? for the last hundred years, yes absolutely, but there want an out and proud fascist element until the mid 00's..

the right and broader conservatism in this country have always been intensely bigoted, that anyone argues this is not the case is frankly absurd, there were scotus cases as recently as the mid 20th century debating whether non white people are actually human beings and if they are do they get rights
