Oct. 11th was #KrakenDay, "...for all the fantastical cephalopods of myth, movies, literature and legend". I was very tired when I had time to post, so I slept instead. Thus, I shall post TODAY.

Today's (10/12) #CephalopodAwarenessWeek observance, #FossilDay, will be observed (here) tomorrow.

Finally - yes, books are expensive.

As such, I strongly suggest borrowing them from your local library whenever possible.

Library doesn't have it? See if they're able to get it for you from another library via interlibrary loan. If not, ask if they accept purchase suggestions from patrons.

In addition to general "HEY LOOK AT THESE WONDERFUL CREATURES" hollerin', I wanted to mention a few people to follow if you're interested in cephalopods:

Good morning to everyone but especially to all the octopuses, for today is their special day!

To celebrate World Octopus Day, here's an illustration of an octopus from the book 'The World of the Sea' by Moquin Tandon, published in 1869.

Cropped image showing an engraving of an octopus Full-page engraving from a book. It shows an octopus lying on the seabed, with a squid and a cuttlefish coming towards. The cuttlefish is making a cloud. The engraving is captioned: 'Plate XI. A Poulpe. A Cuttle-Fish Making His Cloud. A Calmar'.

Apparently it's #NationalPoetryDay in some locales, so I'll take the opportunity to post one of my favorite poems, "In the Desert", by Stephen Crane (1895).

I have borrowed/purchased a Concerning Amount of poetry lately, so it feels appropriate.

Apparently I have Art Cravings that must be fed
In the Desert, by Stephen Crane

In the desert
I saw a creature, naked, bestial,
Who, squatting upon the ground,
Held his heart in his hands,
And ate of it.
I said, “Is it good, friend?”
“It is bitter—bitter,” he answered;

“But I like it
“Because it is bitter,
“And because it is my heart.”

I was raised in an esp. noxious form of evangelical Christianity; I mentally broke from it around age 14-15.

When I was 16, I kept hearing a strange sound, a melody from an unfamiliar horn, sounding over and over again.

For a split second I had Rapture Terror. Reader, it was a sweet potato vendor

Every time I draw cartoon characters punching each other’s lights out, I’m actually encouraging and also literally doing violence. If I draw the Baba Yaga eating a baby, I’m literally advocating cannibalism and also doing meal-planning. Were Bluesky’s guidelines written by twelve-year-olds?
