100%. If everyone having a better life means people get what they need, one side is willing to let people who hate them have the benefits. But both sides are the same, you see.

But it all comes back to people thinking their goals are the same as their detractors. Christian extremists want queer people gone, and so fighting back against that bigotry, to them, is a direct threat against their lives.

A less extreme example is when someone writes art criticism, the same people think you’re “demanding” this be changed, because that’s what they do. They expect creatives to serve them lest they lose a customer, so they can’t fathom someone critiquing something and just accepting that’s what it is.

In my experience, this reaction comes from them assuming the rest of the world views the world they do. They want people who advocate for marginalized people dead, jobless, homeless, etc., so when people employ the same tactics, they assume detractors want the same for them.
