Modern capitalism has more in common with Feudalism and the oldstyle slave-system than most people realize.

From: davidgraeber.org/articles/tur...
"In the case of slave mode of production,
the exploiters directly own the primary
producers; in feudalism, both have complex
relations to the land, but the lords use direct
jural-political means to extract a surplus; in
capitalism, the exploiters own the means of
production and the primary producers are
thus reduced to selling their labor power.
The state, in each case, is essentially an
apparatus of coercion that backs up these
property rights by force."

UPDATE: Following the firing of the director of the student newspaper, Indiana University has now cut the print edition of the newspaper entirely.

Indiana University cuts IDS print entirely, hours after firing student media director
By IDS staff
Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm · Updated Oct 15, 2025 1:23 pm

IU previously directed the Indiana Daily Student to stop printing news coverage in our newspaper. Upon pushback, the university fully cut print, including our special editions. The IDS was not involved in the decision.

Media School Dean David Tolchinsky sent the order to IDS leadership in an email responding to its appeal that the school not censor the newspaper. And the dean attributed the decision to “the campus.” He has not yet responded to a message for clarification.

It really feels like Sam Altman promised a lot of Very Serious Old People he was going to create capitalist blowjob jesus based off a tech demo, and now that the bottom’s falling out he’s throwing whatever he can think of at the wall to avoid getting disappeared because he wasted all their money.

Remembering Italo Calvino on his birthday 🎂
📷 Ulf Andersen, 1984

"Architect of scrupulously imagined, apparently fantastic, insidiously plausible words, Calvino occupies a literary space somewhere east of Jorge Luis Borges & west of Vladimir Nabokov."

I could live here: During the 1990s, Diane Keaton owned silent movie actor Ramon Novarro's Mayan-themed Art Deco-style Los Feliz-L.A. house, built in 1928. She worked tirelessly to restore the home to its original Lloyd Wright design. (posted on Facebook by Vintage Los Angeles) (more: alt text)
Designed by architect Lloyd Wright (the son of Frank Lloyd Wright), the Mayan-Revival-style home was originally built in 1928 for Louis Samuel, Novarro's manager.

However, when Novarro discovered Samuel had embezzled money from him, he took possession of the property in 1931.

Novarro's residency: The silent film star lived in the house from 1932 until the late 1930s. During his time there, he worked with Lloyd Wright to expand and renovate the interior and garden.

Diane Keaton bought the home in 1988 for $1.5 million and undertook a meticulous restoration of the historic property with architect Josh Schweitzer. She later sold it in the mid-1990s, and the renovation is often credited with igniting her passion for architectural preservation.

The house has passed through the hands of several notable residents, including composer Leonard Bernstein, director Jerome Robbins, and actress Christina Ricci.

The Samuel-Novarro House is a striking example of Mayan Revival architecture, with its bold geometric patterns and concrete construction accented with oxidized copper.

Its location in the hills of Los Feliz, with multiple terraces and a private courtyard pool, emphasizes the characteristic Southern California blend of indoor and outdoor living.

🧵It has been clear for years that a key difference between past instances of book banning and the present censorship cataclysm is that the banning happening now targets not only books, but librarianship as a profession and libraries as an institution. 1/4

Just tried to repost a VA Forestry thing about fire season starting today & IG took my wildfire track down. V weird. This Quaker Run Wildfire event was 100% related to flash drought conditions fueled by global heating.

The architecture is obviously older, but the finish makes this something of a 1960s time capsule in Blackpool, Lancashire. Some impressive details inside. bit.ly/4961VNF

"If you see me strictly as a musician it's okay. I don't want to say that it is wrong to see me that way. I don't want to say that it is right. I want to leave everything to the individual to see me the way they think is right. That's the best way."

THREAD. When my parents' cat Bridget went missing, my dad, to try to ease his worry, painted her on a variety of historical adventures. These soon multiplied. Significantly.

After much nagging, he has had some postcards printed of this brilliant series:
