Clear classist bias in this philosopher's whodunnit. The investigation ignored Colonel Mustard to focus solely on the butler from the outset. 😄 (It IS accurate on the tedium of some academic writing though.)

Why is academic writing so boring?

Every now again I like to post my old Guardian columns. This one, from 2007, now counts as an antique.

Academics love a dull read, says Jonathan Wolff.

The obvious framing is awful.

All evidence suggests it was Colonel Mustard, in the library, with a candlestick.

"Thoroughly" interesting, especially the insight on a philosopher's whodunnit and what the butler saw (close up).

Brexit is Farage and his fellow Brexiters' shitstorm to own. He/they can't be allowed to just pivot from heckle to heckle and bad idea to worse - while blaming everyone else - without consequences.

So the suggestion that Labour are going to amplify that truth is to be welcomed.

Two takeaways:
- The Flood Re scheme that covers high risk properties ends in 2039; then owners will pay full market rates meaning many will be totally uninsurable (like some hurricane areas in Florida)
- MUCH more has to be invested in "slow the flow" nature-based measures (hear that, Rachel?)

Absolutely terrifying - the government is leaving communities utterly exposed to the effects of the climate emergency. We urgently need a plan with binding targets for how this govt will protect us as extreme heat and flooding worsen in the years ahead.
Screenshot of a Guardian headline: "Towns may have to be abandoned due to floods with millions more homes in Great Britain at risk"

Subheading: "Every constituency projected to be at greater risk, with many areas likely to be uninsurable, Guardian investigation finds"

The Portland Frog army has now infiltrated Tulsa, OK and they’ve made an unlikely alliance with the T-Rex infantry and Sharks on Hoverboards mercenary forces.

This is truly terrifying.

Sunak saddled us with 25 year contracts with Freeports that's why Labour says we can't join the single market. And my local MP confirmed it. We have been really stitched up. UK Freeports are incompatible with EU ones because companies pay no tax on customs and excise.

America is imperfect, but foreign leaders did not use to assume that the President's family was a key means of leveraging their shared interest in corruption.

Trump's conversation with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is caught on a hot mic. Hard to tell exactly what they are talking about, but Subianto asks Trump about meeting Eric Trump and Don Jr, who supposedly have nothing to do with government while they run the family business.

Trump managed to insult almost every world leader at the Gaza press conference. Erdogan got a thumbs up though.

Canada PM Mark Carney: “I am glad you upgraded me to President.”

Trump: “At least I didn't say Governor.”

Reform Reform!

Another one falls in Kent.

Reform has suspended county councillor Robert Ford after a complaint was made about him by 'several female members of staff.'

The party said that Cllr Ford refused to engage with the complaints process, so he has had the whip removed pending a disciplinary process.

Holy crap. This is terrible.

The article states it's "not related to the current U.S. government shutdown". But of course it is: they are both connected by the GOP destroying everything good about this country from the top down and the bottom up.

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....
