Please check out this WGN Medical Watch story, feat. my colleague Dr. Kate Tomasino! Grateful to our #Northwestern GI Psychology team, the Digestive Health Foundation, and especially to our patients who trust us to help them navigate chronic #gastrointestinal conditions.

Northwestern has not received any NIH funds since March. No written communication about why or what can be done. Thank you Ben Singer for raising awareness at #ATS2025

All of NIH funding to Northwestern University is frozen. This pause includes noncompeting approved funding, new and competing grants with fundable scores. No reimbursements for money already spent have been received since March. This situation is rarely reported so please Please get the word out!

#DDW2025 looked a bit different this year as compared to last year! Enjoyed exploring San Diego with my family, hanging out with the #gastropsych crew, and listening to the newest developments in the #gastrointestinal world. Until next year! @romegastropsych.bsky.social @romefoundation.bsky.social

Restriction is not always maladaptive. When eating is significantly limited in response to GI symptoms, impacts QOL, functioning, weight loss, etc may think of ARFID/disordered eating it’s complex @romegastropsych.bsky.social #ddw2025 #gastropsych

The people who provide healthcare are being squeezed - just like the public.

From the perspective of those of us who work in the ER, the collapse is already happening.

my wife works at a nonprofit hospital and they're absolute getting fucked by these cuts, to the point where there's mass layoffs (possibly including her)

we are genuinely looking at the real potential for U.S. healthcare collapse and that's just...not mentioned in a healthcare thread? At all?

The crush of new grant cancellations hasn't let up.

If your grant was terminated (or your app was pulled) please use this Google Form👇 to submit details for tracking purposes.

Multiple advocacy efforts are moving forward, but we must must must know more about what grants were cancelled and why.

Scroll this whole thread and think about how many people will be impacted, both as researchers, support staff, and patients

I know not everyone can keep up with all the grant terminations, but it’s important to know what we’re losing so I’ll try to compile them here.

First is a study on intimate partner violence with perinatal women (note: the #1 cause of death during pregnancy is homicide)

Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.

More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.

I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

Columbia University has failed to defend academic freedom & freedom of speech & allowed a great institution to be bullied & extorted into submission by an administration hellbent on contorting higher education to their will.

The AAUP condemns this capitulation. We can & must fight back.

I hope that folks in media know the scope of the bloodbath that is happening across the #NIH. They are literally cutting millions of $ focused on #HIV, improving human health across populations, & PREVENTING DISEASES. I can't go 1 hour without another colleague telling me their work was ended (1/3)

The Constitution is clear: the President can't arrest people he disagrees with.

By detaining Mahmoud Khalil — a legal permanent resident whose American wife is 8-months pregnant — Donald Trump seeks to undermine basic freedoms.

We must oppose this move toward authoritarianism.

As we recognize #EndometriosisAwarenessMonth, it's crucial to note that patients with endometriosis are three times more likely to develop IBS. Raising awareness of this link helps improve diagnosis and care; let’s continue supporting and advocating for more research.

As someone who spends a lot time thinking about the values I want to teach my kid (besides PLEASE DON’T EAT DIRT), the thing I keep coming back to is this: I want him to believe that the strongest, bravest thing he can do is give a shit about other people—especially ones who aren’t like him at all.

The two most important of @timothysnyder.bsky.social's rules for fighting tyranny are:

1. Do Not Obey in Advance.
and
2. Defend Institutions.

For #NIH, take these together:
Stand up for the quality and value of your own science, and reject bad science.

Tell the PUBLIC why your work is great. /2

Incompetence in Washington puts every American at risk, no matter how you voted. No one should be happy that the DOGE team - the same folks who randomly published classified U.S. security information online today - wants access to your bank account & Social Security numbers.

1/8. This week I had a few different conversations with scholars who, in the face of the attacks on science and institutions of learning in the U.S., are wondering what to do. One suggestion I have is: keep doing your work. It matters in and of itself. Why do I say that? A few reasons.
