How is your character at taking orders?

Do they prefer that someone else make the decisions? Are they a rebel? Do they avoid the whole situation whenever possible? Would they rather be giving the orders?

What was that profession again? I … see …

From ‘The Big Feat’.

Gebill barely controlled the urge to correct the man’s pronunciation of ‘watch’, wishing to tell him, quite sternly, that there was no such thing as a ‘whurch’ and, even if there was, it would be a beautiful Brutish ‘whurch’ that didn’t appreciate being mispronounced by some Johnny Forriner! He didn’t, because his professionalism, while bent to breaking point under the current circumstances, was his bond. Later, in the pub, he would insult this man to within an inch of his life. Silently. To himself. Insulting visitors to the country was best done with seething impotence and a decent pint.

“Well, monsewer du Valcone, officially … murdering people might very well be a … profession where you come from, but here in Bruta we need a proper purpose for your visit.” He licked the tip of the pencil, sternly, and glared, politely, at du Valcone. “Purpose, if you will, for visit?”

“Murder. Ehm, yuuh, err, duh, err, chrrr. So good?” The man leaned in close, smelling of something awful. Probably wicked Beedaych floral scents. They liked florals on the continent, Gebill knew. “There has been, how you say, a terrible mistake that must be rectified immediately.”

G'morning #WIPSnips. We have something from TLC, but might need to move back over to Clipper again at some point. Progress is stalled, and i think it will be till next month.

“Oh. That’s good,” I say, but sceptical warning bells start ringing in my head. I don’t have many options besides, though. I look to my side and see that Driona’s stride is incredibly complicated. Her two outer legs bent forward like a human’s, while the middle leg bent backwards. It looks awkward as hell, but have to pick up my own pace to keep up with Driona, so I may well be wrong there.
“There is a problem with the situation, though,” Driona adds.
Welp, there it is.
“Problem?” I ask, becoming more and more concerned. The corridor only barely has enough room for the two of us, and I don’t think I can outrun her. I’m trapped.
“See, this friend of mine, we’re not exactly on the best of terms right now… because I owe him some money from a failed venture. However, you might just be able to help with that.” Driona says this with a level of certainty in her voice that makes dread bubble up in my stomach.
“What? How?”
“Well, your mention of personally owned firearms amongst your people gave me an idea, compounded by you mentioning a certain level of constant warfare on your world.”
“…yeah?”

“We are learning about temperature maps. We will study the change in temperature over time.”
“The change in temperature? You mean how winter is cold and summer is hot? This is Kindergarten isn't it? How about we track the solar elevation and azimuth, or the movement of circumpolar and seasonal constellations over time? You know things that are not variable and inconsequential like daily temperature fluctuation,” I lower my hand.
The looks I am getting now range from disbelief to pure confusion. I look from face to uncomprehending face. I might as well have been speaking Spanish. My gaze lands on Mel. Her face is not confused but amused. I am not sure if this is a good thing.

Lots of strong ladies in this story, but more fun to go with the verb.

Sunea's one of those strong ladies anyway.

I heard she laughed once. It put her in the hospital for a week.
The knight rose to her feet, giving a sideways glance at Evari. "Thank you for your assistance, Captain."

Ser Sunea spoke in a curt tone that, if it were directed at Katherina, would have had her instantly standing at attention and wracking her brain for what she had done wrong. However Evari simply waved her hand absently and chuckled again before vanishing into her cabin and shutting the door behind herself. Katherina stared after Evari with a slight sense of betrayal, but once Ser Sunea moved her focus onto her squire Katherina indeed found herself automatically snapping to attention.

A stark contrast to Captain Evari's exuberance in nearly every way, Ser Sunea had her default stern expression on her face as she looked down at Katherina. The knight had been one of the tallest people in the palace when they had left Saelia—second only to the queen—but it was not merely the woman's height and strong build that made her intimidating. More her overall presence. The way every drop of her knightly authority fit her like a glove and radiated off of her in waves. The way it seemed like the act of smiling might cause her physical pain.

“Do your terrible lines ever work?”
“More often than you might think. Now take this EMP cuff off and let me help you.”
“Not a chance. You’ll run.”
Pinga shrugged her one good shoulder. “Maybe. But then you’ll get a fantastic view of my arse as I’m doing it.”

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
I’d never seen an actual window before, but I knew right away what it was. The Tenement had a habit of sometimes developing windows in unexpected places. One day a normally blank wall would inexplicably have a window, and then some time later—maybe a few hours, maybe a few days—it would vanish again. You never actually saw the windows appear and disappear; it always happened when no one was looking. And everyone knew that if you ever spotted one, you were supposed to pretend it wasn’t there until it finally obliged you by going away.
This window wasn’t large—about half the height of a door—and it was covered by a pair of dingy gray drapes that looked heavy with age.
I knew I was supposed to ignore it. I knew the Rule. And yet...
I set down the laundry basket.
Nan Enokido would have said the Tenement was testing me. My father would have grabbed my arm and dragged me away from that hall as fast as he could. Kazuo probably wouldn’t have stopped me, but he would have said I was crazy for even thinking about it. Ryota and Ryuki would have warned me I’d be evicted—and for once, they wouldn’t be joking.
But my mother?
She would have looked right along with me.
“Might as well do it,” she’d say. “Sure, it’s against the Rules. But if we don’t, we’ll always wonder what we might have seen. And I don’t think I could live with the wondering. Could you?”

I would say the inciting incident would be when Eve and Michael see a Mute being framed and wrongly arrested. It sparks a reaction from both of them.

16. Let's rewind back to Act 1 and explore the Inciting Incident. What are some ways the MC could realize something is different about their world/life without necessarily taking action yet? For example, a sudden death, a strange encounter, a mysterious letter, a lottery gone wrong.

I had to chose the most angsty teenager song for seventeen lol
Yes, Vermin is a minor character. He is a conspiracy theorist but a fun crazy one. He is a loveable goofball at his core
Which include
-Blood Bank Pyramid schemes run by vampires
-WereAlbatrosses
-Alien replicants
-mole people trying to control the world
PS
One of those is true 😉

Elves turned up now and again, but didn’t often stay long because, to be quite frank, they thought they were better than everybody and never strayed far from Fenestri for too long. Other beings had made their homes here. This one escaped her, partly because he was really quite big, but mainly because every thing she could use to enfigure his race was covered up. From head to toe. If he had toes. A hooded mask covered his face, the City Watch uniform took care of everything else, but it was a uniform of a material she had never seen before, and the boots seemed to carry more of the … man …than anything else. Murple took out her pipe, flinging Nygel spinning back toward his corner. He hadn’t even woken up properly. Only hearing ‘City Watch’ and acting by instinct.

“Gods’ truth! What the bloody ‘ell’s that?” Nygel shared Murple’s question, only she kept it to herself, tamping down tobacco in her pipe.

“Earth would be your home? And who is ‘we’?” Rondu asks.
“Yes, Earth is my home. We are Humans, and until yesterday, when I was abducted by aliens, most humans thought we were alone in the universe.”
“Kowellians again,” Driona comments from the side.
“Oh, I see. Jokesters. And this is how you ended up here?”
“Sorta. They put me in this pod-“
“Hibernation pod,” Driona added helpfully.
“Yeah, that, just as a bunch of uniformed people burst into the room and arrest them. Then I wake up surrounded by aliens and I just ran. Then Driona here finds me, stabs me with a needle so I can actually understand what’s being said and finds that I’m missing some sort of implant?”
“No Identag and no translation nanites? You truly are a virgin race. There are no set non-interference laws, but meddling with species like yours is frowned upon. But that does not answer the question of why you are here, Jennifer. Driona, would you care to explain? Dropping her off with the authorities would have been so much easier without risking a flight in that deathtrap of yours, and would get her home eventually,” Rondu says and turns back towards Driona. I’d be lying if I say I wasn’t relieved.
