I find it fascinating the econ history from Francis Bacon to Adam Smith via Hobbes, Petty, Locke, Hume etc … but that is also a history of law and ideas of social division of labor

and some form of social responsibility to make it all work

Juan López Moctezuma’s Alucarda (1977) is irreplaceably peak exploitation horror, the proudly Mexican parallel to Jesus Franco and Jean Rollin. Half-forgotten dream memories of Universal’s gothic rules and tropes brought to demonic life in cavernous ruins. Loved how hostile this is?

this is why count of monte cristo with the footnotes rocks

now that is 1840s tale, not a classic classic but it is close enough in time but also far enough away in time it feels fantastical yet not

also it is a story of revenge and faustian bargains / the christ temptation 3 times

Most "classics" are boring as fuck to a modern reader in no small part because the context of the story is not understood by them and so many of the allusions and "inside jokes" known to then-contemporary readers have been lost in time and in translation

Well Powell wrote the Powell memo in the 70s before becoming a SC

yeah fossil fuel companies many want to preserve existing factories and other high capital

and want revenues from that, but they also hate upkeep

the accountants understand eventually it is unjustifiable even if you want to keep an existing already depreciated asset running if it’s positive profit
