Taking a brief moment to focus on Harrow: The Blighted Plane, because I wrote this section for the "Bringing Harrow to Life" chapter and I think it's appropriate for the day.

What is Crystalpunk? #ttrpg

Let’s tackle this one right out of the gate since it will be the question most asked of you and one that you might be asking yourself right now. Crystalpunk is a subgenre of fantasy and science fiction. Like its more popular “-punk” cousins (steampunk, cyberpunk, dieselpunk, etc.), the prefix describes the primary power source and aesthetics of the setting. Thumbing through the pages of this book, you see bold, vibrant colors and crystals everywhere. Crystals are responsible for things as banal as lighting walkways and as extraordinary as causing powerful mutations in creatures. The crystalblight is the trapped and twisted planar energy that drives every supernatural power and event in the setting. If you’ve read any chapter of this book, the “crystal” half of crystalpunk is very obvious. But the “-punk” half of the genre is what should make it more than just an aesthetic choice—otherwise, we would have just christened it “crystalcore” and called it a day.

In the world of Harrow, there’s no longer an oppressive ruling class that is actively keeping the people crushed under their heels, they were overthrown 400 years ago. But the state of the plane that they left behind is what must be fought against. The Four Nations (flawed as each may be in its own right) are fighting tooth and nail to outlast and overcome a world that has been actively trying to eradicate them for hundreds of years to provide a better future for their people. Young adults take on the mantle of gatherer knowing that their lives will probably be shorter for it and the elders in their communities shake their heads but keep their admonishments to themselves. It’s a dangerous, dirty, and above all else necessary job essential for the future of the Four Nations. One of many far less exciting but equally dirty and exhausting jobs that everyone wakes up each morning to do in the face of whatever hardship might come that day. Every person living in Harrow is subject to the unfair and occasionally stifling circumstances they’re in, but they each refuse to allow themselves to be victims of it.

When the Blighted Plane throws a punch, the people of Harrow spit blood, smile, and try to get their own shot in before the bell. And that’s really what makes Harrow: The Blighted Plane crystalpunk.

If the characters are built with strong worldviews and they are drawn into the narrative ecology, then pretty soon the characters are going to differentiate each other over the issues at stake in the scenario. Once you've dropped the idea of everyone acting as a coherent team, then there's no

need for everyone to agree on a single course of action or approach. Players can stick to their characters' ideologies and convictions and take appropriate actions based on them. These actions will have consequences, possibly negative ones, for the other player characters and that's a good thing. Let the player characters be free moral agents.

The entire point of building richer player characters is to allow the players to express those characters fully and not just exist as a set of skills for acquiring information and a quirky personality to vocalize. Placing a character into scenes of immediate dramatic relevance is to look the player in the eyes and ask, "Okay, show me who this character you've built really is, for real."

Players are encouraged to create Investigators that are not simply representations of themselves, but instead fully realized characters with distinct personalities and feelings separate from their own. Investigators are not merely an alternate identity that their Players take on for the duration of the session. An Investigator is more like a character in a novel, distinctly separate from the author of the book. Often an Investigator's decisions in the story as it plays out will surprise even their own Player! It's the Player's job to answer the question, "what would this Investigator I created most likely do in this situation," and roll the dice for them.
