So someone on a discord I'm in asked me about using blender to fake vertex based lighting like in a 90s/00s psx/pc game after we watched a stream of an "authentic retro psx" game that used per-pixel shading, so I made them a mini tutorial of how I achieve that look

Instructions in alt text

Vertex Paint mode in Blender (it's in the drop down where you can switch between object, edit, sculpt, etc modes)

Shader/Material setup in Blender

Surface: Emission
Color: Multiply (mix node)
Factor: 1.000
A: My texture
B: Color Attribute | Color

Starting the vertex painting. I usually start with medium grey for areas in shadow and layer/smooth as needed

End result looks more like light/shadow as would be seen on a level in a game from the 90s/00s PSX/PC scene. The back alcove has bright blue lighting (you can use colors and are not limited to greyscale here, and in fact a lot of games from this era would use bright fully saturated colored lighting)

Reminds me of the FFVI mobile port that upscaled and redrew the sprites at a higher resolution and looked bad. Also the Mega Man X iOS port.

Additional step that may or may not make a difference:
In render properties, change Color Mgmt -> view transform to "Standard"

I could have done a little more to make this look slightly nicer, this is just a quick and dirty example to demonstrate, also it has the drawback that you have to model out the level in blender, but I'm sharing this in the hopes that it helps someone get more authenticity out of their project

To use this in Godot, set a standard material up as shown in the image (specifics again in the alt text)

Godot Shader Material:

Shading ->
Shading mode: Unshaded
Diffuse Mode: Lambert (optional)
Disable Ambient Light: On (optional and poss redundant)
Vertex Color-> Use as Albedo: On
Sampling -> Filter: Nearest

For Unity/Unreal export FBX, for Godot export GLTF/GLB. Be sure to look at the alt text for specific settings, this is what worked for me on Godot. If I have the FBX settings wrong, please let me know so I can amend this

GLTF export panel in blender:
Data -> Mesh -> Vertex Colors -> Use Vertex Color: Active

FBX export panel:
Geometry -> Vertex Colors: Linear

Hey yall look at this new art i got! A 50kt Union Starship from my Novikov setting, without and with the hull painting (here abstracted). Beautifully depicted by @ncc-60205.bsky.social !

A spherical spaceship, coloured a bluish-white, and set against a starry background. It has a structure at its front that looks like something between a radio telescope and a cell tower, with a disc at the end of it emanating a thin blue pillar of light. Around the base of the tower are several smaller features, including four laser turrets, four railgun ports, and eight probe/torpedo ports. Around the sphere is a seam separating the front and back hemispheres, and along this seam are more visible ports, distinct from those near the front.

Same as the prior image, but a jackson pollock-like pattern covers the hull behind the forward structures. It gives the impression of chaotic, busy paint work.

Reminder it took less than a year for Windows 7 Users to get Registry Hacks going after end of official support and start just doing community patches and fixes to the OS that made it usable even now

There is zero reason to believe the same isnt just gonna happen now

Windows 10 goes out of support today. My fave useless fact about w10 is that the iconic blue desktop background is a *photograph* - not CGI.
