A few people gave me too much credit by assuming I did it to be a smartas to someone nobody liked, but while I *am* a natural smartass, 2LT me didn't have the confidence to fuck with majors and I just unironically did it that way not expecting anyone to get mad.

My salvation was that the battalion commander heard about it and basically laughed at the XO and said, "Well, that's what you asked for, wasn't it?" And then the XO was replaced a week later and it didn't matter.

One might think I would have inferred that the major didn't actually care about my opinion per se and thus I wouldn't be overly critical.

I did the other thing. I thought it was bad and didn't follow the intent of the relevant regulations very well. I was specific and cited examples.

Bosnia, 1996. 2LT me was scrambling to figure out how to be a baby staff officer without accidentally sending anyone into a minefield when updating the R&S plan. The battalion XO decided to give me an additional assignment: write a critique of the battalion commander's command policy.

For as much of a giga-navy as we built in 1942-45, a lot of it was just oddly... sensible? Which was probably smarter of course (look at German tank design lol) but also imagine the monster ship we could have made if we really wanted to.

It's extremely difficult to grasp the scale of the mass death caused by Eurpean diseases coming to the Americas. It's one of the worst things to happen to the human race. European colonialism was less a great achievement and more akin to robbing a memorial service for a school bus fire at gunpoint.

A thing I think doesn't get internalized enough in the discourse of the European subjugation of the Americas is that there was no way for contact between Europe and those continents to not end in abject disaster for indigenous Americans because of disease burden.
