Just finished The Bayou by @ardenpowell.bsky.social - delighted that I bought it on a whim when looking for more gay southern gothic after Summer Sons. Very vibey and morally ambiguous. An excellent Halloween treat, and I will for sure be reading again.
The cover of the book The Bayou, by Arden Powell. It shows the stylized outline of a church, surrounded by trees, j front of a full moon. Under the church is an alligator, with glowing eyes and teeth. It all looks very sinister

@leemandelo.bsky.social has a special ability to absolutely ruin me. Summer Sons is different from The Woods All Black, but equally brilliant and gripping. Grief, rage, queerness, toxicity, terrible legacies, and found family. Another new favorite southern gothic 🖤

Also, the audio is excellent

The downside of listening to a really good audiobook is that I can’t sneak a few pages of reading during the day in the work bathroom

Yay!! So excited for a confirmed release! It will be worth the wait

Update - 8 chapters in, and All Of Us Murderers is an absolutely perfect book. Immaculate vibes. Still don’t know if this is an Elizabeth Peters gothic (human evil) or a Barbara Michaels gothic (supernatural) and I am LOVING every second. Wish I could call in sick and read.

No exceptions. If you use Gen A I in any capacity whatsoever, you suck.

Yes, the way you're using it too. You're not special.

"She probably doesn't mean me"

I do.

I've seen some vocally anti-AI people recently make an anti-AI post and be surprised there are still pro-AI people following them, and I can explain this;

most pro-AI people think they are somehow the exception. the way THEY are using it, SURELY you would take no issue!

well, we do. so fuck off.

It was a really interesting survey to fill out, and also a genius bit of marketing as I’m even more ravenous for the new book

Amazing. Wish I could do that for all the AI emails I’m getting from parents lately - I don’t need to read florid essays that boil down to “I’m mad at my kid.”

I just saw someone use the abbreviation “AI;DR” and I’ll be laughing for a while.

Wow, the description of sinking into a book so deep you have no idea what’s happening around you, then having to fight to pull your attention away… 100% accurate. ADHD isn’t just “can’t pay attention disorder,” it’s also “only pay attention to interesting things and ignore everything else disorder”

All of Us Murderers by KJ Charles Chapter 1 impressions: the cover is 70’s gothic perfection. Amazing set up - love the dashes of humor and self-awareness (genre-awareness?). The ADHD recognition is STRONG - could easily have been a snapshot of my brain. Think I’m in love.
The book All of Us Murderers, by KJ Charles. On the cover, two men run away from a large and creepy gothic manor.

Honestly, the importance of bagels and lox in this series is one of my favorite things. When my neurodivergence is really butting up against the world, a big old loaded up bagel and a quiet place to eat it truly is the cure

I am no longer saying “I want to eat dinner” because you could replace “dinner” with “children” and that would be v problematic

an unfortunate irony about this post - and even if you are the staunchest anti-ai critic out there, i think you'd agree - is that some of the most bigoted things are being said to respond to this. copy/pasting phrasing and terminology used by bigots but replacing "dna" with "bits" doesn't make it ok

i'm completely serious when i say that much of the dismissive ai discourse on here fires the bigotry neuron

if you're writing a sentence that sounds like eugenics but you go "oh that's fine to say because it's not a real person" (whatever that means) you may want to consider what made you okay with saying that

Trying to explain this to people who didn’t grow up evangelical makes me want to tear my hair out. So many people have no idea about any of it

Yes, this book is one of the best I’ve read this year. Eerie, angry, horny comfort. It is high on my list of books I wish I could read again for the first time (though it will be just as excellent on all rereads)

Don’t wanna piggyback someone’s perfectly good post with book promo, but lrp:

Might I suggest The Woods All Black, an historical Appalachian gothic set in the late ‘20s that explores gender, sexuality, and trans/queer bodily autonomy? It’s also (1) horny (2) spooky and (3) a bash-back revenge story

Even “trying it out” tells the techbro assholes bankrolling it (and wrecking YOUR environment to do so) that people want it.

Think of it as dressing up as a N*zi or Klan member for Halloween: even doing it in jest strengthens the original message.

Yes, this right here. Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas said “art is not a noun, it’s a verb,” describing it as a co-creation of artist and audience. AI has no place in this.
thetransfemininereview.com
Read bad art. Write bad art. Critique bad art.
Here’s a statement that might be radical in 2025: ‘bad art’ is still art, not content or slop. “But what about AI?” What about it? It demands that we interrogate the definition of art itself, and therefore here is mine: art is a practice, not a product.

Art is not something we consume. Art is something we do.

Artificially-generated ‘art’ does not fall beyond the purview of our definition of art because it lacks aesthetic merit. It has nothing to do with aesthetics. AI ‘art’ is not art because it is not something that the ‘artist’ has done.
