Colliding Galaxy Pair NGC 1316 and NGC 1317 in Fornax - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - https://flic.kr/p/KECMvS

This dramatic pair of interacting galaxies are located in the southern constellation Fornax (The Furnace).
The largest, NGC 1316, is also known as Fornax A, meaning it is the brightest radio source in Fornax (also the fourth brightest in the entire sky). The strong radio emission originates from its central supermassive black hole.

Visible near its bright centre are many concentric shells that are remnants of past mergers with other galaxies. The formation of such shells are a common observation in computer simulations of merging galaxies. The shells form when the cores of merging galaxies orbit around their common centre of mass in an ever tighter orbit while disrupting the halos of both galaxies and sending billions of stars into eccentric orbits. This process creates outward travelling density waves until the collision eventually settles as one single larger galaxy. Other prominent galaxies display similar shells and one of the finest examples is Centaurus A

The halo of the galaxy is very distorted and shows many prominent tidal tails and swirls of stars which have likely been ejected by a previous merger event. The next collision appears to be lining up already, with the smaller elegantly shaped spiral companion NGC 1317 already appearing somewhat disturbed by the pull from its more massive neighbour. A few billion years from now it will likely have been completely devoured by NGC 1316; its stars being spread throughout the realms of the large elliptical and leaving...

I really lucked out in these ten minutes. Not only did i get the best snowy plover in flight shot of my life, but then the bird flew back AND I GOT THE FULL FLIGHT SEQUENCE six minutes later! Birds! what the hell!

Spiral galaxy NGC 613 and the search for the progenitor of SN 2016gkg. Pockets of star formation are visible as green nebulas of gas in this near-infrared and visible image. The galaxy's bar is quite distinct and completely within the bounds of the image, but much of the outer arms are not included. I will mark the approximate position of the supernova with a Flickr annotation. I find the circumnuclear ring of star formation to be especially beautiful in this image, though you'll have to zoom in to see it clearly.

I spent a good number of days working on this, which feels incredibly slow compared to the pace I've been keeping with the single filter (grayscale) images of galaxies from the past couple of months. There were a whole lot of cosmic rays to deal with, and I did my best, though there are still a few hiding here and there. I bumped up the saturation a good bit along with the clarity and dust texture of the nucleus.

This enormous galaxy cluster is located 2.2 billion light years away in the constellation Virgo. Deeply reddened by the cosmological redshift, it's member galaxies shine to us with a faint orange glow across the abyss of space and time. All the fuzzy light sources in this image are distant galaxies, and only a modest sprinkling of sharp foreground stars, located in our own Milky Way, reveal our cosmic vantage point.
The cluster is so massive that its gravity acts as a lens and distorts the light from galaxies behind it. While several other galaxy clusters contain examples of brighter gravitational arcs than Abell 1689, this cluster features the largest known number of gravitational arcs and is an important target for the study of dark matter. The arcs are very small and faint but a few of the brightest distorted images of distant background galaxies are present in this exposure.

Abell 1689 also contains the largest population of globular clusters ever found. A deep high resolution view from the Hubble space Telescope, covering just a tiny part of the cluster, reveals that it is home to an estimated 160,000 such globulars. A staggering number compared to the approximately 150 in our own Milky Way galaxy.
