Honestly a pretty formative Pitchfork staff memory for me was when D'Angelo returned and started playing shows. I probably watched him cover "Space Oddity" 50 times when it happened. Black Messiah is a masterpiece. His cover of "Sometimes It Snows in April" still makes me cry. We didn't deserve him.

A couple years ago I heard some D’Angelo and it knocked me out. I shared my discovery with a friend and was told, "He's been around since the 90s." Two points: 1. I'm fucking out of it. 2. D’Angelo was awesome. Rest In Peace.

I think part of why musicians in my world gravitated so strongly to D’Angelo — besides, obviously, his monumental musicianship — was how much he clearly thought the music was most important. he tasted idol status and he *hated* it. ran from it. he pushed himself harder than was expected of him.
