Latin American migration governance: the politics of ambiguity and adhocracy
In the context of Latin American migration governance, there has been a clear shift away from regional human rights-based commitments towards discretionary

Great to write w my brilliant friend Cintia Quiliconi @flacsoecuador.bsky.social about Latin American regional migration governance and its shift from human-rights frameworks towards more discretionary, security-driven approaches- and what it means for protection and policy. doi.org/10.1093/ia/i...

Not to mention how interventions displace people, affect lives, and turn the populations into collateral damage
This is against international law and part of the destruction of multilateralism. A very worrying return to the Cold War in the current geopolitical context. It evokes a past of interventionism and now capturing a leader by force? Waiting for the regional statement from Latin American leaders?

A very worrying return to the Cold War in the current geopolitical context. It evokes a past of interventionism: from Guatemala in 1954 to Caracas today, the historical echoes of bombings and external pressure as tools of political and economic control in Latin America are still present.

Such a fab group of scholars in one place and ready to set a great agenda. Thanks for organising.

COP30 will test regional action in LatAm -and whether countries address climate change impact on women who see increasing care burdens, threatening livelihoods, further violence, limited access to basic services; all of which most likely will force them to flee

Expecting Argentina’s recovery to hinge on Trump or Milei’s consideration of ‘whatever it takes’ commitment is bad news for the people, and of course dangerous. Unsure as well about what the Financial Times means by ‘national commitment’ -by whom/ to what?! Unsurprisingly biased on.ft.com/4nhn2jA

mientras académicos e intelectuales siguen hablando sobre el cambio que era necesario etc, a que cambio se refieren? que es lo que estan apoyando? Cuidado con categorizar y legitimar el retroceso democrático y sus violencias.

El Salvador just fast-tracked itself into liberal authoritarianism, pushing through a constitutional reform to allow indefinite re-election, extend the presidential term, and eliminate runoffs. And just to kill regional cooperation, quit Parlacen too.

Women’s bodies are war zones in Sudan, DRC, Haiti and beyond. Yet just 10% of funding to support survivors is provided.

Sexual violence in conflict is not invisible - it is ignored.

Our plea to donors: don’t cut money for survivors of these cowardly, pathetic men.

The closure of UN offices and humanitarian programmes that support migration and refugee undermines protection & the human rights infrastructure that support it. It leaves millions without essential aid amidst violence and poverty. This are root causes, and will create not reduce the need to flee.

A week in El Salvador for excellent work w @cintranatalia.bsky.social Visited shelters, borders areas, and humanitarian actors x interviews & presented a report on new migration flows and challenges of regional protection. Impressed with what was said and equally inspired by what was not said.

New publication in Migration Studies! Can humanitarianism truly protect displaced women—or does it sustain the very structures that make them vulnerable? Find out here and open access of course academic.oup.com/migration/ar...

Y claramente quise decir ‘ve’ no ‘be’…

Another extraordinary book that takes you into race, slavery, Haiti, and New Orleans, while exploring the essence of womanhood. It takes you on an emotional journey through the brutal history of slavery and the enduring legacy of colonialism. A powerful story and story teller.

This is also a call to move beyond seeing forced migrant women as passive victims and towards autonomy-promoting/supporting systems of protection in global migration governance. All this with @artsofdenial.bsky.social @cintranatalia.bsky.social and Gloria Zucarelli.

New publication announcement! here we challenge prevailing assumptions re humanitarian governance by exposing how gender-blind and gender-sensitive protection regimes often reinforce, rather than resolve, vulnerabilities faced by forcibly displaced women. academic.oup.com/migration/ar...

Excellent work and presence of @sotonpolitics.bsky.social convening. Thank you and sorry I missed it this year.
