HUMANIFESTO – EDITION 24
Geneva, 26 November 2025 I last wrote en route to Sudan. This was one of the toughest missions I’ve done yet, and included a week in Darfur as we sought to respond to the horrors of El Fasher.

My diary for @theobserveruk.bsky.social of a dramatic week in Darfur, as we try to open up new routes, funding and solidarity for people at the epicentre of global suffering.
"El Fasher’s youngest are paying the highest price. Children carrying other children to safety."

Governments are a crucial part of shaping the Humanitarian Reset to make our work as effective and efficient as possible.

Excellent conversation in Geneva on our plans in Gaza and Sudan, the support we need, and how we improve delivery for millions in need.

Poor rains, rising hunger and funding cuts are pushing millions to the brink in #Somalia.

I've allocated $10M from UNCERF for early action – to protect people before drought becomes catastrophe.

Food. Water. Health. Critical to reach people in the hardest-hit areas.

Humanitarian action cannot be reimagined without the activism and agency of young people.

Excellent to spend some time with newer @unocha.org colleagues in Geneva on how to challenge and disrupt power.

A vicious, orchestrated, and unchecked campaign of violence by weak men against women and girls is raging like wild fire.

As we start 16 Days of Activism, we must stand with survivors, with partners supporting them, and hold perpetrators to account. #16Days

The mission is right and the movement is out there. But as we reimagine humanitarianism, I need to hear your ideas.

So here is a 🔊Listening Channel: a space for debate, creativity, challenge.

Made a surprise visit to @iom.int Chiefs of Mission gathering to thank them and @iomchief.iom.int for their vital work everywhere people are facing humanitarian crises. Lively bunch …

Darfur is an absolute horror show.

We have a moment of opportunity if the world is ready to seize it.

Civilians must be protected. Access must be expanded. Flow of arms must be limited.

One year done.

Let me know if you can name all the places I’ve been (no cheating…)?

In Sudan, we are working relentlessly with our partners to reach El Fasher and every person cut off from lifesaving aid.

Palestinians across Gaza are cold and soaked following recent rains. Frustration grows as floods rise and what little they have is destroyed.

UN and partners are mobilizing to help, but much more is needed.

Remaining restrictions must be lifted to urgently get more aid in.

I spent yesterday in Korma with survivors of El Fasher atrocities. So many halting, harrowing conversations in Arabic, or translated from Zaghawa, about horror and misery.

Then Haseena pushed through crowd. Speaking in perfect English, she wanted the world to hear her story. #Sudan

Unspeakable suffering in Tawila.

Over half of the fleeing survivors are children. One injured woman I met walked into the camp after surviving an attack, carrying her friend's starving child.

They're asking the world if help is coming.

In Darfur, Sudan’s lost children wander through a landscape of death
Around 200 unaccompanied children have arrived in the Sudanese town of Tewila after escaping El Fashir, where RSF fighters have carried out mass killings.

In Tawila, I visited this nutrition centre, backed by the #Sudan Humanitarian Fund – a lifeline for displaced families, powered by Sudanese health workers and local groups who know the needs of their communities best.

This is humanitarian action amid immense hardship.

A day visiting survivors from El Fasher in Korma and Tawila, and meeting community volunteers.

Darfur is the epicentre of human suffering. So many stories of brutality and horror. These stories must be told.
November 16, 2025 at 4:04 PM
In Tawila, I spoke to women who fled El Fasher only a few weeks ago. They carry terrifying stories of brutal violence. The world has not protected them. We must do better. #Sudan
November 15, 2025 at 4:35 PM
Met local leaders in Tawila and Tasis representatives in Korma to insist on safe access and protection of civilians.

We will go anywhere and talk to anyone to get access to those in need, guided by principles of neutrality, impartiality, humanity, independence.
November 15, 2025 at 4:31 PM
In Tawila today, I spent time with mothers and caregivers of severely malnourished kids and women who have endured the worst horrors of the siege of El Fasher.

The world failed to protect them: we must not fail them again.
November 15, 2025 at 1:38 PM
After several days on the road, we finally arrived and saw the massive site where survivors from El Fasher are taking refuge.

Will be in Tawila for next two days to listen, learn and galvanize support.

Up early again for the next leg of our Darfur mission. Thanks to our friends @savethechildren.org for putting us up in Golo.

Six hour drive ahead to Tawila, where we need to get much more lifesaving support, humanitarian presence - and protection - to survivors. #Sudan
November 14, 2025 at 12:48 PM
In #Darfur, I spoke to @apnews.com on the catastrophic situation for civilians - and why it matters to be here now.

Our access is still choked by fighting. We need unfettered, safe access to get aid moving.

On road deeper into Darfur.

We have sought and received clear assurances – backed by international community – that humanitarians can work everywhere we are needed in Sudan. We want to show it is possible.
November 13, 2025 at 7:47 PM
Thank you to our friends @nrc-global.bsky.social for putting us up overnight in El Geneina. We were in Zalinjei this morning, now heading east through Darfur. We aim to open routes for more humanitarians & lifesaving supplies. @iomchief.iom.int & @wfp.org Carl Skau also in Sudan in coordinated surge
Arrived in El Geneina.

Spending next few days in Darfur to listen to communities who have fled horrific violence and to understand how the world can do better.
