The sort of slow-ruminative, borderline eerie piece you might have expected more from in this series ... inserted here more as an interlude.

I like this one.
Apologies if you've already seen it.

German jazz trumpeter Hans Berry left Germany for Belgium but was dragged back and drafted into the Wehrmacht. He was captured by the Russians and interned in Focsani camp in Romania where he composed "Focsani Melody" of which a recording survives.

Gonna need that big head for that book.
I really didn't know your head was that big.
Might as well have chosen that name.

Or "Richard Headley".
Pure fluke. ;)

But as long as it's not one of his more "bothered" pieces, Mingus' music strangely, weirdly suits a lot of different moods.

And a title and piece like this seem to recognise that:
Self-Portrait In Three Colours

Charles agreed ... ;)

And yes, very true.
I like also how that is a companion piece to East Coasting.

Mingus was clearly a lover not only of Duke, Monk, Tatum, music, himself and perhaps too many women for their and his own good (!) - but language. Coasting: pun; W Coast Ghost: association-rich rhyme. also Mingus Ah Um; Mingus Dynasty ....
Atmospheric. And for once (not always the case), Clarence/Gene Shaw somewhat brittle, often plaintive sound & strangely flexible tone fit the piece exactly. Hadi's gruff tenor (as opposed to his "Gene-Shaw-like" sinuous alto) always fitted Mingus' music in that short period (1957-59) ....

Has anyone else noticed the Search function on here has gone steeply downhill?

I can retrieve older posts of mine I want to reuse via the from@me method - but Search is now useless for anything fairly recent (i.e. last 3 mnths)

@jay.bsky.team @bsky.app what's going on? Is this a temporary glitch?
He is bright, but - like most forms of intelligence - bright in some ways, not in others.

(And the thinnest form of intelligence of all is "IQ" ...)
Or to put the same eyebrow-raise a different way:
Indeed.

I realise it's scripted, and presumably not only edited & post-produced but to an extent "under orders", but the decision making is shocking. Based for the most part, against all observable evidence, on either an inflexible, unshakeable obsession from Day 1, or petty grudges, or both.
