Also, if you share air with someone you are having a direct conversation with.

Proximity to the infected source is important.

Again, clean air standards won’t fix this. It generates vast improvements but isn’t a complete solution.

Masking will still be required.

Even with improved clean air standards it won’t eliminate the issue of indirect or direct transmission of viruses.

I.e if someone sneezes or coughs directly on you, or if they contaminate a surface, you touch it and then yourself.

We will still need to mask with clean air standards

A weird sentiment I have seen the past few weeks is that if we fix/improve air filtration then people won’t need to mask.

That’s not true.

Increased air turnovers & better filtration will remove lingering airborne particles faster.

The problem is the source and being close to an ill person

even the smartest folks whose takes i otherwise appreciate, who otherwise want to resist fascism themselves & encourage others to, find wearing a mask in, at least, public indoor spaces—to prevent the harms of this administration from impacting others—to be a bridge too far; it’s shameful, frankly.

yeah, i think a commitment to public health obligates you to get vaccinated and, when you are sick, do what you can to avoid spreading that to other people. the demand that one mask at all times in public spaces is, i think, unreasonable.

There's a new BA.3.2.2 from South Africa today. For the most part, there's been little substantial change in BA.3.2 over the past few months—mostly synonymous mutations & very little happening in spike.

But this new one has 3 spike mutations & looks quite interesting. 1/6

Of the ~600/1200 of these CDC workers that were RIFd during the shutdown, I wonder how many of those were doing Covid monitoring or contributing to the Covid dashboards.

a bunch of new XFG designations spanning from 845S to 679R and 704L. B ut the most interesting one is PL.6 a LF.7.1.10 (445P) that got 478T and S:T500A, becoming the ifrst lineage with S:T500A to get a designation

Quick Sars cov2 variant update.
XFG.17.2.1 ( 219S 679R) is the fastest then there PE.1.4/PE.1.7 but still an Oceania only lineage.
After them some new designations are to watch XFG.10.4 first XFG designated with 435S
PQ.2.8.1 has S:H445P.

This was a beautiful drawing that was made for a mask distro event earlier today.
Graphic showing some of the different mask types, with a reminder to check that the mask has the certification on it. If it is not certified, don’t wear it.

Here's the latest variant picture for the United States, to late September.

The XFG.* "Stratus" variant continued it’s dominance, falling slightly to 81% frequency.

NB.1.8.1 "Nimbus" was flat at 8%.

The trickle of BA.3.2.2 samples from Western Australia has continued.

While the frequencies of this variant are still quite low, it’s ongoing spread (likely to many thousands of infections by now) gives it every opportunity to acquire the mutations it needs to succeed.

If I were actively trying to destroy the United States from within, going after and dismantling its public health would be like the first thing I’d do.

Just pointing that out.

This is beyond dangerous. It’s leaving us vulnerable in a way we can’t really fathom until it’s too late.

EPA officials directed scientists to assess whether the government could develop methods for detecting abortion pills in wastewater — a practice sought by the anti-abortion movement. The request appears to have originated from a letter sent from GOP members to Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator.

Scientists at the Environmental Protection Agency found that they could develop methods to identify traces of the medication if necessary — a practice long sought by the anti-abortion movement.

Ah okay, I had been told many years back that /s was serious and /j for joking.

It looks like I’m out of date with the abbreviations, my b.

Looks like /srs is serious now

No, it’s not seasonal. It’s all year round spread

Was thinking about how it’s probably not a fun time to be dating randomly from your community
patbiosteamist.bsky.social
I like to daydream before I go to
sleep, and I came up with the phrases DTM and DTT.

The context was a dating profile and saying if you want to be DTF, you’ve gotta by DTM (down to mask) and DTT (Down to test).

Feels clever. Going to actual sleep now. Use if you will.
