I'm just a late bloomer. I didn't peak in high school - I'm still out here getting cuter. (Anarcho-Socialist | Jewish & Autistic | CisHet | He/They/Dude/Y'all | Official PFP by @kurtbelcher.bsky.social) www.nicknamenick.com

It's naive to assume that modern Republicans *only* became racist as they are now 'cause Trump. Like, no, they *were* as racist as they are now - the difference is they're more open and full-throated about it, abandoning any attempt at decorum and optics. They traded in dog whistles for air horns.

They have 100% always been this way, though notably the transition from helicopter rides and referencing crushing minorities abroad humorlessly transitioned to nazi shit, but like that's basically a new layer of paint instead of a new perspective.

For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.
That's why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed -because Young Republicans weren't radical enough.

The worst drivers I've dealt with are those who think they can talk on the phone while driving, even though it just distracts them from (say) noticing how fast or slow they're going, and the most inconsiderate in public have their faces glued to a screen to the point it inconveniences everyone else.

For example: I hate smartphones. It's nice that it has some useful functions cell phones didn't, but I feel *constantly* monitored and accosted by them. It certainly doesn't help that they also make people less aware of their surroundings and even more reckless. I *wish* I could make them explode...

As time goes on, I become more and more of a Luddite. It's not because I think technological progress is bad - it is, in fact, a good thing - but that we live in an age where every minor development is seen as "innovation" through marketing and how many of them are downright unnecessary or harmful.

It's why I'm disdainful of the phrase "building character" as it, more often than not, is just a euphemism for disproportionately treating someone like shit to the point where they become submissive, docile husks who'll tolerate abuse due to being so desensitized. Which, no, *isn't* a good thing.

A safe space is no different than a club that has rules of etiquette for treating other members of the club, but the term "safe space" alone upsets some people because...they think such etiquette is censorious? Weird, I assumed society establishes rules about behavior, like, all the time!

Most anti-safe space shitheads are the kind of over-opinionated yet boring people who, more or less, want to force others to listen to them and act aghast when someone doesn't want to.

Like, do marginalized people "need" to hear what bigoted assholes think? No, they don't - they *already* know.

Not once have I seen an explanation for why teenagers must hear things that upset them in virtue of the unspecified speech-acts being upsetting, nor have I ever seen an explanation for why teenagers will be forbidden to express displeasure with upsetting things.
William Hague: Why I’ll banish ‘safe spaces’ at Oxford
The new chancellor tells Cheltenham Literature Festival that there will be no ‘cancel culture’ and students should expect to hear things that upset them
October 14 2025, The Times
The new chancellor of Oxford University has said there will be no safe spaces for students and warned would-be undergraduates that they will “hear things that will upset and offend them”.

Ever since Beastars, I've wanted the phrase "the birds and the bees" replaced with "the wolves and the rabbits."

Me every time someone is like "Studio Ghibli Hayao Miyazaki so cutesie ootsy cozy wozy cottagecore"
First image: the little kid from Twilight Zone: The Movie, Joe Dante segment "It's a Good Life" saying "I'm wishing you into Cartoon Land"
Second image: the cursed boar god Nago from Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke, screaming in pain and fury as worms writhe from his flesh before he resumes trying to eviscerate every human he sees. This is one of the victim characters of the movie.

The problem is that optics are simply a tactic that can be used disingenuously. Just look at how easy it is to rehabilitate someone's image after they did something that should be egregious enough where forgiveness is nearly impossible. Even war criminals can get humanized with the right news story.

A lot of people assumed, at one point, Republicans accepted gay rights except...they didn't. They just put homophobia and homophobic policy on the back burner *until* they could pursue it again.

I call it "optics-induced blindness": this notion that optics reflect behavior behind closed doors.
