just stab so sharply, and since The Unconsoled operates in a more meandering and sleepy space the resulting emotions didn't leave quite as deep an impression on me. I do think it's Ishiguro's biggest swing by a mile, though.

That's totally fair, TU is probably the reflection of the human condition I find more instructive between the two, and I agree it leaves more ambiguity to consider. I think the moments in NLMG like Tommy screaming and Kathy explaining that there's no pain relief after the fourth donation...

Guard your mentions from James Wood! (I also like it, it's a slow and circular ride but still nice. Never Let Me Go is probably my favorite book in general though, the whole last third makes me ache in a way I never felt from The Unconsoled and only did from Remains Of The Day at the very end.)

As for Djokovic loving the process...he's played an incredibly light schedule this year and didn't exactly seem to relish his time on court at many of the tournaments he did play. That could be why he's still going, but with the constant physical issues I think there's probably more to it.

I'm sure everyone late in their career is playing with pain to some extent, but with Djokovic it seems particularly visceral and constant at this point. Every tournament is ending with at least a minor injury, eventually there'll be something worse. But his Shanghai matches just looked like hell.

Not necessarily! But Djokovic's time on court in Shanghai particular looked deeply unpleasant to me -- vomiting, collapsing to the court, various tweaks and injuries, etc -- and I just struggle to rationalize someone putting themselves through that if they're not wedded to the lifestyle.

Him continuing to play strikes me either as a grieving period from the Sinner/Alcaraz stuff, after which he'll retire, or addiction to the sport that overpowers the attendant agonies. Not sure which is more depressing. He's completed the sport, yet it's not finished with him.

Belated Djokovic thought -- I was already struck by him taking uncompetitive losses to Sinner and Alcaraz on the chin, but playing a tournament only to puke repeatedly, get hurt again, and eventually lose to the world No. 204 just seems like a miserable time.
