Editing Retreat Day 1 afternoon - we did an exercise where we condensed our first chapters down to a fifth of the size and then analysed what we kept in/eliminated. Really helpful to figure out what your priorities are in your story and practice writing punchy scenes [1/2]

There's a range of writers here with me: some are working on academic writing; there's a lady writing a memoir; and a couple of us fiction novelists too. It's fascinating hearing about the other stories and ideas being worked on, and a surprising amount of overlap between the forms of writing.

I draw the cards,
not to see what’s coming,
but to make sense
of what already hurts.
The present is a shroud
it curls, it clings,
it smells like endings
I haven’t named yet.
I am not looking for the future,
only a language
for this confusion,
a pattern to pin my breath to,
a knowing that the present moment
was always the hardest for me to read.
