Our Family History Fair on the Huddersfield and District #FamilyHistory Society website has more info on the Family and #LocalHistory Fair. If you are in the #Huddersfield area on October 25th, be sure to drop in and check out what FACHRS and the other societies have to offer!

FACHRS will be present at the following show, and Lois and Terry would be delighted if members popped in to say hello, or non-members would like a chat about what we offer as a society.

Cemeteries should be more than backdrops for ghost tours in Oct. then neglected the rest of the year. In this webinar on Oct. 23, Jason Harpe will show you how you can create programs that will draw locals and visitors to these often under-utilized cultural resources. Register: tinyurl.com/3eb4n3hs

Her #OnePlaceStudy keeps expanding! I think it is now a #TwelvePlaceStudy?!? From time to time I consider expanding my Waters Upton OPS to cover the modern civil parish (which takes in Bolas Magna and part of Ercall Magna) but there is still so much to do for the small patch already being studied.

As fans of ‘FAN Club’ research in #FamilyHistory will know, it’s always a good idea to check out the neighbours of the person(s) you are looking into. This can apply when looking at tombstones and church monuments too, as this example (in two posts) from a #OnePlaceStudy shows. #OnePlaceWednesday.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 11: Military

The base of a tablet inside St Mary’s church at Fawsley (my local #OnePlaceStudy) gives strong military vibes! The tablet is dedicated to Richard Knightley (d. 1728) & family but has no details of military service. Nearby though, another tablet helps us out... [1/2]
Two photos, of different parts of the same memorial tablet, combined in one image. Above: The first part of the inscription on the upper part of the tablet, which reads: "Near this place lyes interr'd Richard Knightley of Fawsley Esq who married Elizabeth Waldron Daughter of Henry Waldron, Judge of the Island of Barbadoes by whom he had numerous Issue. Lucy Knightley, his Eldest Son who is now Possessor of Fawsley and at whose charge these Monuments were erected, Richard Elizabeth, and Deborah, are now liveing, all the rest dyed Infants." (Below these words, but not shown here, the inscription concludes: "His Second Wife was Mary Upton, by whom he had noe Issue, he departed this life the Ninth day of July in ye year of our Lord 1728 Aged 69." Below: Carved into the stone at the base of the memorial tablet are lots of objects described in one publication as "military trophies." They include the helmet of a suit of armour, a drum, numerous weapons including swords, pikes and firearms, plus - I think - one or two musical instruments.

The 14th century tower of St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere, Cumbria today. Up until the 1890s the church was rendered in lime. This was removed and replaced with a cementitious pointing. In December 2017 a project was completed to restore the tower’s lime render.

#31DaysOfGraves
Day 15: Damaged
Sadly, many of the gravestones in #RutherglenCemetery are damaged, mostly due to neglect. Some have been in bits for decades, but the Plunkett gravestone fell and cracked in two some time during 2023/4. Please take care in cemeteries, especially near larger stones.
Gravestone of James Plunkett, his wife Mary Barr and their family. An imposing dark grey granite stone with an arched top, standing on a plinth, about eight feet tall. Photographed 8 Oct 2021. Rutherglen Cemetery, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Gravestone of James Plunkett, his wife Mary Barr and their family. A dark grey granite stone fallen from its plinth, broken into two pieces and lying flat in the grass, inscription uppermost. Beneath it is another stone, lying face down. Photographed 7 Aug 2025. Rutherglen Cemetery, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. A tiered plinth carrying various inscriptions to Alexander Reid and family, beside which lies a stone cross with an angel figure, resting on another plinth which carries inscriptions to John Murray Tonks and family. It is unclear to which plinth the cross and angel belong. Rutherglen Cemetery, South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Gravestone of Alexander Blackburn and family, which has fallen from its plinth and is lying on its side among a jumble of stones and vegetation. In the background, more gravestones in various stages of decay. Rutherglen Cemetery, South Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Day 15 of #31DaysOfGraves - Damaged

Around 160 west coast winters and the invasive roots of wispy lichens have given this, formerly sturdy, slate memorial at Kilnave on Islay the appearance of splintered and weathered wood.

A few more generations and it too will have returned to crumbling dust...
