To PIs: how do you know when it’s time to write a grant?

I’ve been doing a ton of “we’re going to do this and this and it will be awesome” grants but the preliminary data aren’t always quite there yet.

It’s hard to balance the urge to write a grant with the feeling that we should wait a bit more.

When I was an undergrad, I saw a talk by Oliver Sacks about music. During the Q&A, someone asked Sacks if he thought science would reveal the deepest mysteries of art. Sacks (a rare humanist among scientists) said that he doubted it, at which Eric Kandel (the host) leaped up and grabbed the mic.

Do you mean that it seems cruel for them to learn that it hurts so early when they can’t do anything about it yet? Because for patients with congenital insensitivity to pain, the consequences arise as early as in the first year and can lead to long-term complications on physical and mental health.

So excited to share our preprint uncovering FGFR3 autoantibodies as pathogenic drivers of pain sensitization.
Using patient serum, human DRG and rat models, we found that autoantibodies can find FGFR3 on sensory neurons to induce hyperexcitability and hypersensitivity.

I hope this Nobel Prize gets people talking meaningfully about our amazing immune systems and the importance of basic research to human health (and funding basic research).
