Proud queer, based in Vancouver, BC (unceded Coast Salish territory). My politics are best described as eco-left. I will definitely also be posting about pop culture and urbanism, and will certainly be engaging in general nihilism. They/them, please.

Welcome to new followers! Please buckle up, because my posts are complete chaos and I like it that way. There is no theme, no continuity, I'm just out here brain dumping all over the timeline.

It's weird that Zombie has become a Halloween song right? Like, that song isn't about a literal zombie. Not even a little bit.
nealjennings.bsky.social
Hmm. Perhaps a miscommunicated "we're also in this other place now too"?
nealjennings.bsky.social
Eww. Also, like, both is always an option? CanadaHelps isn't exclusive.

I don't think I ever properly mourned the year (the world, for that matter) that could've been, that should've been, or any of the other things I've lost in the fallout. I think I'm still stuck somewhere in the denial and anger phases.

There's a little sequence after the credits for the first episode where they have some interviews with the cast and crew about the making of this season, and one of them refers to the arrogance we all had on December 31, 2019, about our plans for the year to come and that hits so hard even now.

I've started the CoViD season of The Morning Show. Nearly 6 years later it's still very upsetting to watch scenes set in the early days of this pandemic hitting North America & even the several months preceding it. I don't think we've fully reckoned with what the first half of this decade did to us.

Three months later I am still hoping to stop hearing about the election for the mayor of New York City. Even just one or two days would be nice.

I found a 19th century Cat Villain!
A huge chonk of a fluffy cat sitting on a table near an open fire. The cat is cream and grey and appears to be shaped like a barrel in a fur coat. They are scowling fiercely with their moustache and bewhiskered ears apparently flowing back into the cold wind. There's a definite vibe that this villainous cat twirls their moustache as they evict orphans into the aforementioned blizzard and think Scrooge was an easy-going lightweight. They are magnificent.

I'd prefer it if they weren't written articles masquerading as oral histories, as they so often are. Does the word oral mean nothing anymore?

The laneways of the West End are so overrun by reckless drivers I can't imagine a single one that would be safe for children to play in. And I've walked the full length of every single one.

Look, this isn't wrong. But how will Raoul ever pay his gambling debts if Christine doesn't get the lead role?

New reading of The Phantom of the Opera: Carlotta is simply asking for safe working conditions, and Christine is essentially a scab

*I. Wow, I don't even know how I typoed that one.

Like there's a whole side rant about that, and I just don't buy "it's easy, you're just not trying hard enough." I'm glad you succeeded at art school or whatever, but I am confident that I would not, and lots of other people would not either. II accept that, but don't, like, blame me for it please.

OK I finally got around to reading the Oatmeal AI piece and while I generally agree with their vibes on AI, I hate the notion that everyone is capable of being a skillful artist if only they practiced enough.

It's been like twenty minutes and my heart is still racing and I am so angry I just want to light literally everything on fire right now. How do we fix this road culture, since our govts are obviously not doing it? I can scream at strangers who treat my life as disposable, but I'm only one person.

I'm mostly mad I didn't think to snap a photo to report him to his company, but also I fucking hate it here. This time and place where these assholes think they're entitled to our lives.

A truck driver just sped at me while I was crossing a laneway at a marked intersection (the pedestrian path was even paved like a sidewalk), & blared his horn. When I reminded him that the speed limit is 20 & that he doesn't have the right of way, he retorted "you need to learn to walk" & sped away.

The more I hear of it, the more excited I am for the upcoming Demi Lovato album. Kiss is a killer track.

Props to Communauto who will charge me less for a vehicle, including all the gas I need, than any of the major rental car companies will charge me (pre-gas) for the same trip.
nealjennings.bsky.social
Someone on here once tried to convince me that electric cars were doomed to fail because no one rents electric cars and, like, I think the rental car companies have at least a little bit to do with that.
Screenshot of the Hertz rental car booking site. For the same five-day booking, an EV is priced at CA$3,056, whereas the petrol vehicles are at most CA$451.

oops *swerving, but you probably figured that out!

Perhaps if you bike *really fast* you can avoid the drops!
nealjennings.bsky.social
So if I see someone serving wildly down the bike path in the rain I'll know it's you?
