Some words of wisdom? Comfort? from Merlin in this week’s #TarValonOrBust reading
A picture of a page from Mary Stewart’s THE CRYSTAL CAVE. It reads:

"And are you still so afraid of the world, Ulfin?" But he would not answer that. I finished tying the wrist.
"Well, it's a wild and violent place, and the times are cruel. But they will get better, and I think you will help to make them so.”

I hear you. I think, in this moment, that I’m not the teacher to take this on. I am grateful that others are.

I’m not interested in #AI in education (or having students engage with it). I appreciate Adam Aleksis’s observation that we’re equating AI with “magic”; Vauhini Vara’s observation that we personify AI; the threat that AI makes us sound the same; and all the texts and images it steals.

Is there someone who writes about systems thinking and disability that you'd recommend I read? Consider this a wide net; I don't know quite what I'm looking for, so I can't ask a more focused question...

My latest project is open access and available to the public. I co-founded the Journal of Literacy and Urban Schools with Dr. Alicia Leggett. It took some time to get the journal off the ground. However, we were able to get our first issue out. Our second issue will follow soon.

Worth saying that a curriculum change is *not* a book ban. A teacher may replace/update TKAM in their curriculum. Students can still access TKAM at their school library or in a classroom library. M4L want to remove books from classrooms, libraries, & other public spaces. Intent & access matter here!

Mom's 4 Liberty finally realizes they are on the losing end of a 75-25 issue seeing @rweingarten.bsky.social celebrating banned books and just decide to go with, no, no, the liberals are the book banners.
moms 4 liberty tweet attacking "the left" for being the real book banners because Randi Weingarten is celebrating banned book week.

For my fellow civics teachers, here is a lesson I wrote for @pbsnewsclassroom.bsky.social and that I use in my own classroom- www.pbs.org/newshour/cla... . I am a proud supporter of @whyy.org and serve on the PBS Newshour Classroom advisory board. Please support your local station.
Lesson plan: American democracy and you

Inclusion isn’t about a classroom or a service. It’s about culture. Principals must lead it. #LeadInclusion #EduLeadership #UDL #EduSky #EdChat
Colorful cutout silhouettes, one red figure raised high. Yellow text block reads: 'Lead a culture of inclusion.'

My ELA department chair colleagues from grades 6-8 and 11-12 and I met today to generate a vision statement for vertical alignment work. From there, we identified priority standards that we will begin to generate common resources for to support teachers in our large district.

I’ve been shifting from quarterly grade pitches to holistic weekly grade assignments based off of a course rubric (similar to contract-based grading). It’s an ever-evolving process to help students reflect and get a gauge on their progress. #ungrading #assessment

I at least startled and entertained some peers! The professor was thoroughly entertained!

In my 1st semester of college (2003!), I had to present in my Introduction to Philosophy course. I was responsible for introducing the class to Socrates.

Being an education major and theatre kid... I opened by singing (a cappella) Socrates's lines that begin "The Tower of Babble" from GODSPELL.
Red and black sketch of a man's face, with voluminous hair. The word GODSPELL in white letters appears over the face and hair.

No particular text, but I used to lean into the classic “Individual versus State” for Antigone and have begun preferring “what happens when everyone is stubborn and digs in?”

Also, Fugard’s The Island is a great paired text, though I’ve use a redacted edit due to content.

Teaching Oedipus and Antigone in a month or so, and want to steep my brain in the most interesting commentary on these plays. Way outside my wheelhouse here. Any recommended books/essays?
