I'd forgotten that his sidekick was Donald Gee (among many things, the vicar in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads)

Of course, we didn't memorise ALL phone numbers. There was no need to. Jim's was written on the back of your maths book, Andy's was on an old Our Price Records receipt etc...

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

For my generation, our televisual vocabulary was built upon the idea of "TV as a little theatre OR cinema in your living room". This is a great thread about how we've largely lost half of that.

The death of multi-camera TV: a thread. I know most of you will know the technical parts of this (and may have read it in the other place) but bear with me. 1/ 🧵
A shot from the studio rehearsal of Doctor Who: The Daleks' Master Plan episode 'Volcano', showing several actors ont he TARDIS set, with various video cameras around the scene.

I love exploring French supermarkets - all the regular genres of products we expect, but with loads more interesting varieties!

There's a "chip sauce" variety too, but not in the Scottish sense, more like a tangy dill flavour.

A little supermarket in Caen - seems to be quite a big brand round here.

I applaud this development in crisp culture.
From Brittany, a bag of Brets brand crisps, in Lebanese Falafel flavour

Oh go on then... one last visit to the cosy, friendly Moon & Sons pub in Caen. Fabulous beer (local, Belgian and... Irish, strangely enough) vegan food and loads of fantasy literature references for people better versed then me.
A gothic but cosy Halloween-themed corner, with autumnal colours, warm lighting and happy drinkers. A comfortable pub scene, full of colourful!19th century bric-a-brac. The ceiling is painted like the night sky.

Envious that the Echinops at the botanical garden in Caen are still going strong. Feels like a late bonus burst of summer after a couple of chilly days. Four species of butterfly too.
Purple Echinops flowers in front of autumn-tinged trees.

Looks more like Nyhavn in Copenhagen!

Ah yes, just checked and you're right!

Nice example of linguistic "false friends" here:

Been doing a lot of reading on the shoe industry. Interesting fact, a Skiver as in the trade of thinning leather down on seams etc, is from the OE/ON ‘skifa’ ‘to cut or split’. The term skiver to avoid work is from the Middle French ‘esquiver’ to escape.

(This was in Bayeux, so maybe more standard behaviour for neat middle-aged chaps here.)

A few minutes before seeing this, a bloke walked past me, dressed as Obelix. A very neat, middle-aged and fairly slim bloke, so the costume looked quite anomalous.

They should stop polling, and just stick with the big one we had in 2016 that revealed that roughly half of us will believe any old shit.

"If there was an election tomorrow, which there won't be, and in fact, if you compare UK political opinion now with 4 years ago... shall we just ignore the polls?"
mradrianclark.bsky.social
I think a lot of us were asking that question in 2016. Nine years later...

Dad’s books are full of empathy, common sense, and a healthy suspicion of the powerful. But at its heart his work is also about how systems keep people poor while pretending it’s their own fault. So I hope Kemi’s taking notes as well as reading the jokes.

Kemi Badenoch claiming Terry Pratchett as her favourite author is wild

Yep. Farage is terrible, but at least he's consistent. Everything he says (even the fake "man of the people" stuff) is of a piece with the golf club bore. God only knows what Jenrick is prepared to shapehift into.

If you're wondering why so many of my generation ended up with the eyes and ears and minds that we did it's because we could watch stuff like this on schools programme. This is simply astounding.
