I got obsessed with data in college and have always relied on it for my work. I'd never seen a government agency exclude data about an entire racial group until last week.
streetlightnews.bsky.social
A Streetlight investigation found EPA data excluded how many Black residents live within one mile of sites under the agency's oversight. After questions from @molliebryant.bsky.social, the EPA restored the missing numbers, calling the error a coding "bug"

EPA excluded, then restored, data on Black people who live closest to toxic sites - Streetlight
The EPA said a bug caused the error, which only affected data on Black residents

If you’re in Oklahoma, look for migrating monarchs for the rest of the month. It’s the most magical time of year

This reminds me that a few years ago a squirrel got into our plumbing and died (rip) so the score is either squirrels 1, Bryant-Threadgills 1 or I guess squirrels 0, BTs 2, depending on if you consider the plumbing bill a squirrel victory or not

I saw a squirrel for the first time in days when I let Reggie out today. The squirrel was eating a nut or something, minding its own business, then he saw Reggie, did a spit take and ran away
molliebryant.bsky.social
Oh man. Reggie killed a squirrel last week and I take full responsibility and will no longer encourage him to protect the bird bath but tbh kind of nice to go from a million squirrels to zero bc I guess word got out in the squirrel community

I taught Reggie to go after squirrels in the birdbath

It’s such a tiny thing, but I was really proud to see my picture up on the wall of Pentagon correspondents. Today, I’ll hand in my badge. The reporting will continue. Reach me on Signal at HMongilio.52 or at [email protected]

As someone who grew up around a brand of evangelical toxic paternalism I must say, controlling men feel threatened when they see people living free. It asks them to challenge their stereotypes about masculinity in a way that is very uncomfortable—they learn how weak their version of a man really is.

I know of one paper that does this, the paper in grants pass, or, and I’ve bought a one day pass for i think just $1 many times. No one wants to subscribe to something with a hard paywall bc they don’t know what they’re going to get.

This has been a great idea for 20 years and I've often heard "it's a race to the bottom" from publishers, which is both an assumption and fully in their control to prevent or otherwise manage.

AI-generated "books" are flooding Amazon and other online retailers.

Here is a regular reminder: Take note of who published the books you read or buy.

Presses are perhaps more important than ever in helping identify trustworthy resources in a failing information ecosystem.

new @teenvogue.com: students at the 9 colleges invited to Trump's "college compact" have been pushing their universities to reject it.

+ a bit of a scoop: @sunrisemvmt.bsky.social tells us that they're launching a national coalition to support students pushing their schools to fight the Trump admin
College Students and Faculty Resist Trump’s “Free Speech” Funding Scheme
Nine universities across the country were given a test of loyalty from the Trump administration. Now, students are demanding their schools not sign the president’s 10 point compact agreement.

“I could see that there were more kids coming in checking out books. There are always classes that come in…but this was kids just coming in on their own, and lots of kids who are not regular library patrons.” Circulation rates at Lincoln HS are up 55% since the start of the school year.

We need to talk about how social media algorithms push moms down a slippery slope of distrust.

From "Are my kids getting enough support in school?" To "Maybe I should homeschool." To "Maybe modern medicine is bad."

I've seen this first-hand in research I'm doing on parenting apps. 1/🧵

UPDATE: In emailed statement to me / @reason.com, DHS alleges that WGN-TV producer Debbie Brockman "threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer."
Screencap of email from DHS public affairs: Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin:

“U.S. Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations and when several violent agitators used their vehicles to block in agents in an effort to impede and assault federal officers. In fear of public safety and of law enforcement, officers used their service vehicle to strike a suspect’s vehicle and create an opening. As agents were driving, Deborah Brockman, a U.S. citizen, threw objects at Border Patrol’s car and she was placed under arrest for assault on a federal law enforcement officer.

“This incident is not isolated and reflects a growing and dangerous trend of illegal aliens violently resisting arrest and agitators and criminals ramming cars into our law enforcement officers. These attacks highlight the dangers our law enforcement officers face daily—all while receiving no pay thanks to the Democrats’ government shutdown.”
