I remembered the context for this! I have a shirt with a quote from an old Lois Tilton review of my @bcsmagazine.bsky.social centaurs: "Crude and unlikely, full of gore porn and liberal guilt". Kid was like, "Why do you wear that? Is it accurate?" Pretty much. So this was me explaining liberal guilt

“Yesterday was Columbus Day,” I told my 8 year old. “You know, Columbus. He was that guy who sailed the ocean blue in order to murder, steal, and destroy.”
“So why do we have a holiday named after him?”
“Exactly.”

In July 1951, "Steel Grandpa" Gustaf Håkansson, 66, unofficially rode the Sverigeloppet, a 1000-mile race through Sweden. By not sleeping he arrived a day before the other riders, crossing the finish line on a flat tire.

Happy #BicycleBirthday, Gustaf!

A DUBIOUS CLAMOR would smell like a pastry shop with freshly cleaned steel underneath. I kind of doubt that the book perfumers would be up to it, it's just as well this is just a fun thought experiment.

THE JAGUAR MASK would smell like copal incense. NIGHT ROLL would smell like bike grease.

This is fun

What would *your* book smell like if you engaged in a mega weirdo scented pages promotional campaign?

A brief post for the new book out this week. I moved across the country in August, packed up our life in Ontario and came home to the Saanich inlet. Which happens to be where much of this collection is set.

Grid scale batteries are changing our electricity system. Excellent new visual story on batteries in FT today shows just how far this technology has evolved.

Fasten your seatbelts, this is just the beginning.

If you didn’t know, Alaska has been hit by a massive storm, causing severe flooding. Many Indigenous villages have been completely wiped out, with some houses floating away with PEOPLE INSIDE THEM. Please keep posting to spread the info. They need help.

These are mostly indigenous communities in Alaska that have been slammed by the storm.

The local manager of a small airline fleet says he is the only one doing evacuations right now!

Defund FEMA and people are abandoned. Defund public media and no-one knows.

FYI, today is Indigenous Peoples Day.

For many of us, being Indigenous means living btwn worlds, rebuilding what was taken, creating a future where our grandkids won’t have to explain why their heritage matters. We’e the prayers of those who came before us & the proof that their strength worked.

Upon his first visit to what is now Haiti and the Dominican Republic, Christopher Columbus posted men who spent the next year roaming the island in gangs, looking for gold and taking women and children for sex and labor.

Today is (or was, depending) Columbus Day.

I can’t encourage you enough to go read 1493 by the very thoughtful Charles Mann @charlescmann.bsky.social.

1493 engages frankly with the changes wrought upon the world from connecting Europe to Asia through the Americas.

Fascinating, and educational.

"The whole world is a feast of runaway craving" is the opening line of this poem and IMO a very strong argument for why you need to read it today
