On MLK Day 2021, his family posted this picture of him. Seeing him in color reminded me that our history is not that far behind us. Seeing him at home with his kids broke me.

Exasperated, I mumbled what would become the opening line to the spoken word piece, "Fathers"

⭐TURN OFF EVERYTHING.

So far, my feed is *significantly* cleaner.

Still stunned by D’Angelo’s departure. Grateful for the brilliant musical legacy he bequeathed to us. I thought it worth re-posting this meditation on black music and black mortality. www.newyorker.com/news/daily-c...

I’m launching a new blog, “Mannie Likes…!” My goal is to highlight the people, projects, & things that are inspiring, entertaining, educational, or I’m just glad they exist!

There's enough negativity in the world, this is attempt to embrace and spread joy. Starting with my love for horror films!

I need to get better at updating my Letterboxd🤦🏾‍♂️

I don’t know how some of you do it, but since I write do much as it is daily, typing up reviews (especially when during nightly movie watching) gets too taxing on my brain.

UPDATE: They absolutely LOVED it! It’s been requested for next year’s Horror-Ween watching too…and since one of those people make the request is Mrs. T’Chawi, looks like we’ll be watching it again next year! 😂

We're back to the vagaries of English.

When I and others say "Young Republicans have always been like this," we mean "there has always been a contingent of Young Republicans who acted this way." When you say "We were very much not like this" you mean "I did not experience people like this."
amandamarcotte.bsky.social
For those tempted to say Young Republicans have always been this way, they really have not. When I worked on campus and did bipartisan college events after, they were very much not like this.

That’s why groups like YCT and eventually TPUSA formed — because Young Republicans weren’t radical enough.

This whole thread is a GOLDMINE for people trying to do better and/or find the right words to reach those who are genuinely interested in being better:

“Change because you want to…You don’t need our approval.”
zeets.bsky.social
I don’t know if it’s about being born perfect, but at what point of their history were conservatives of all ages about racial and gender inclusion and respect for marginalized people? Their entire history is being against rights for non-white people and women. Where was the confusion?
amandamarcotte.bsky.social
I know people are eager to claim they were born perfect and never had to learn and change, unlike losers like me.

So congrats! You were born knowing conservatives are inherently racist. Eat your cookie rewards.

But remember: Telling people they aren't allowed to grow and change hurts us.

When I was in college in the 90s, I didn't hear much in the way of "niggers" from young Republicans. I nonetheless knew that they didn't want me around...both personally and politically.

My continued existence requires me to identify when supposedly genteel people hate me.

Not amazing . They eat and break bread with these people .

At the expense of the folks these people want to send to gas chambers, because lost in the looks shaming is how much they’ve said this in public to people

And they get rewards for it
jodyavirgan.com
Kind of amazing that the photo Politico used of one of these folks -- the one who made a joke about gas chambers -- is from an event that Politico sponsored last summer.
