Time for a pinned post.
I live in Aotearoa New Zealand.
I post about, in no particular order:
Our cats: Midnight and Jasper.
My clothes.
My life.
Books.
Being a children's librarian.
Sports, especially #womenssport.
Craft.
Random shit.
Boosting / sharing creators' work.
Two black cats on a floor. One is demonstrably larger than the other. Books are a big deal tshirt, with Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems. The Monster at the End of This Book Book with matching tshirt, held by a rainbow haired librarian wearing rainbow glasses. The library is for everyone tshirt in bright colours and cartoon like head and shoulders illustrations of people with love hearts on their cheeks.

Tag yourself. I am fatuous pauper.
Work, Work, Work

On about this date in 1801, Britain's first census was begun. In a subsequent survey conducted in 1881, residents were asked to furnish their "rank, profession, or occupation." Some of the more puzzling responses, as preserved by the London Genealogical Society, included:

Colourist of artificial fish

Knight of the Thimble

Disinfector of railways

Examiner of underclothing

Invisible net maker

Electric bath attendant

Proprietor of midgets

Fifty-two years an imbecile

Knocker-up of workpeople

Maker of sand views

Gymnast to house painter

Turnip shepherd

Emasculator

Sampler of drugs

Fatuous pauper

Drowner

Count as female

Fish-bender

Goldfish-catcher

Cow-banger

Running about

Grape-dryer

Beef twister

Random waller

My fav local board member: a tale in 3 images:
1. He told everyone it was their last day to paint on his face.
2. Sign painted out white.
3. Sign used to advertise upcoming local event.
A fence with a Vote Mark Dennis sign. A blank freestanding large sign. A large freestanding sign with spray paint advertising Arts in the Ville.

Went to the farm earlier. Saw the most coquettish pig you've ever met.
A pig, working the camera like her life depends on it.

A #Roman figurine of a dog, shown lying down with its back legs curled underneath, looking at something behind it. Dogs feature quite prominently in Roman everyday art, associated with loyalty & healing, & valued for their companionship (just like today!) 🐶 🏺 #AncientBlueSky #Archaeology

We have a new second-hand fridge in the pipeline!
Which will replace the leaking and rusty one...
And, it cost some favourite family recipes.
(It's a friends, and her son wanted the recipes 🥰).

The WHO has verified the elimination of both measles & rubella in all Pacific Island countries, alongside rubella elimination in Japan. The achievement follows 2 decades of coordinated immunisation campaigns, regional surveillance, and high routine vaccine coverage. buff.ly/EpFb7HK

My #kikorangi librarians/book people/NZ-ESOL people — can you recommend books/authors for adult women learners, specifically with an Aotearoa/ Pacific angle?? A lot of the books available are aimed at a male audience. Not School Journals or school focused. Reply or DM pls🙏📚

This might sound weird, but....
Consider the large print collection.
Often adult learners find the larger text, and greater white space, easier to deal with. It's not as busy, so they can find it more restful.

I'd go through my lists, but I have so many lists saved on my library account, it's broken and I can't log in.

Cutest story: my first & second special votes for Saturday were for a couple on a democracy date (their words).
They were going for a coffee & chat about who they were voting for.
madhmstr.bsky.social
Normal Saturday at work: door count around 50 (yes, we are VERY quiet.)
Voting Saturday with box inside the library: 196.

We had people pacing outside before we open at 9am.

Between voting drop off, and special votes, we had ~150 extra through our doors in our small library.

The box HAD to be inside the library, and chained up.

I don't know how many special votes we did. The last was at 11.55am.

Given that anyone with a brain ought to recognise how many “national dishes” were impossible pre-Columbian Exchange, it’s nice to finally see pushback on the inherently ethnonationalist/racist claim that some cultures have “authentic dishes” and other “parasitic” cultures only “steal” them
