Kind of tired of making profiles. Me: she/they, old, sometime writer: babushka to a promising goblin. If we did what I said, we wouldn't be in such a fucking mess. Top picture: cement ship, Aptos

The people who think the government should be run like a business are killing something that has a 180% ROI. THAT is how you bankrupt a casino.

The government of Jamaica has set up a portal for contributing to official relief efforts. I will update this thread if anything analogous opens up for Haiti, Cuba, or the DR

If anyone has good photographs of European goldfinches that they're happy for me to use as painting references, I'd be so grateful. Thank you. 💛

Please share among birders, if you would! 🙏🪶
In California, between Medicare and Medicaid, I currently get it for free. I don't know how long that will last.
If you scroll throiugh the journey toi the microcosm youtube account, there's some information on beginner microscopes in there somewhere. Set your kid to digging it out, though, because I couldn't find it in a quick glance.

As long as we keep calling these drugs "weight loss drugs" Americans will scorn people using them, because you know you're supposed to suffer to get healthy! Meanwhile the drugs have huge beneficial effects on diabetes, liver disease, and circulatory health, even in people who continue to be fat.
NPR: story on how a drug is helping people.
Posters: 1. Not everybody can take that drug. Implied: people who can't take the drug are somehow morally superior to people who can. 2. (random unrelated social problem) exists.
And the fact that she lived long enough to have a life is a triumph, and the fact that she died young anyway _does not detract_ from that.
I'm proud of you for evdery step in this: noticing that something was off: stepping in even though you hadn't figured out what was going on: giving lowkey observation instead of overbearing advice or argumentation: not getting into a battle oiver the social consequences.
Just after I took this picture the roses were visited by a lovely little green sweat bee & I hope that it's not a problem for the bee to be busy right now?
Late October on the Central Coast. Indications of why the Anna's hummingbirds no longer migrate in the winter. Yes, it will be like this all winter. The rainy season is inspiring to certain garden plants even if they are neglected.

In our region it’s also tarantula season. At Pinnacles this time of year male tarantulas leave burrows and are all over the roads and trails.. rangers are typically out trying to get drivers slow down en route #PinnaclesNationalPark 🕷️

I made my dear old guy breakfast at 4 in the morning for a few months while he adjusted to his job making breakfast for students (which he held for 35 years!). It wasn't subjugation. I was a pretty extreme morning person then, & he was a night owl. It was grace between equals!
I _think_ I might be overly sensitive to THC or some other component. A comically unfortunate episode when I was 19 has made me disiclined to experiment further...
Most of my pain reliever experience is post-surgical. For my chronic & recurring pain, I have little success outside tramadol, so if that doesn't work it's just suffering.

I love codeine but it's big guns for me since my pain threshold & tolerance are both higher than is probably healthy (I often don't know I'm in pain till real damage is done). Vicodin seems sort of pale in comparison. Tramadol is juuuust right for me.
It seems like tramadol usefulness varies a lot from person to person. I love it,but I know people who get no benefit from it.

"Jose" sent us this pic of a farmworker in Arvin operating a hay bale tractor. It takes years of experience to operate this type of vehicle as it requires a lot of attention to detail. Hay is often used as mulch for vegetables as it helps the soil retain moisture. #WeFeedYou
